[Bach IOC위원장 작심 발언, 올림픽여자복싱이슈는 러시아의 마타도어(Matador/흑색 선전)]
Paris2024올림픽여자복싱에 출전한 2명의 여자복서들의 테스토스테론(testosterone)의 수치가 높다(XY 염색체)는 논쟁이 러시아 출신 Umar Kremlev 국제복싱협회(IBA)회장에 의한 IOC흑색선전으로 발화되면서 Paris 2024올림픽의 달갑지 않은 이슈로 변질되고 있습니다.
Thomas Bach IOC위원장은 “지금까지 우리가 말할 수 있는 것과 모든 사람에게 명확하게 드러난 것은 프랑스와 프랑스국민들이 두 팔 벌려, 온 맘 다해 전세계를 환영했으며 전세계에 프랑스의 면모를 보여주었고 프랑스사람들의 스포츠에 대한 열정을 보여주었음”(I think what we can say so far and what has become clear to everybody, France and the French people have welcomed the world with open arms and open hearts and have given the world a glimpse of France and a glimpse of the passion of the French people for sport.)
“이것이 바로 올림픽을 열렬히 사랑하는 프랑스이며, 사랑의 도시 파리에서, Paris뿐만 아니라 프랑스 전역이 올림픽과 사랑에 푹 빠졌음”(This is France completely in love with the Olympic Games, in the city of love, Paris, not only in Paris, but overall in France.)이라고 Thomas Bach IOC위원장이 파리올림픽대회 첫 주에 대한 칭찬의 평가였으며 그는 선수뿐만 아니라 관람객들이 보여준 열정이 특히 인상적이었다(praising the first week of the Paris Olympic Games, adding that he was especially impressed by the passion not only of the athletes, but the spectators)고 하면서 “이 모든 것은 전세계를 고취시키고 있는 마술을 뿜어내고 있는 것임”(All this creates a magic that inspires the world.)이라고 프랑스와 파리에 대하여 칭송하였습니다.
Montreal1976올림픽 독일 국가대표 펜싱 금메달리스트자격으로 Bach IOC위원장은 “파리 Grand Palais경기장에서 펜싱 경기를 볼 때까지 진정한 펜싱 경기를 본 것이 결코 아님”(You have never seen fencing until you have seen fencing in the Grand Palais)이라고 칭찬하면서 트라이애슬론에 대하여서는 나름 익살스러운 표현을 시도하였는데(tried a not-so-successful quip about the triathlons)

“트라이애슬론은 센세이션얼(선풍적)이었는데 이렇게 이야기해야 하나요, “Seine”-세이션얼. 이런 표현이 잘 먹히는 지는 잘 모르겠지만 그냥 시도해 보았음, 적어도 좋은 시도였다고 생각함”(The triathlon was sensational, or should I say, Seine-sational. I don’t know if it works, but I gave it a try, you know. At least, say it was a good try.)
Bach IOC위원장은 수 많은 나라에서 TV와 디지털참여가 강력한 추세임을 주목하면서 “우리는 전세계 인구의 절반 이상이 Paris 2024올림픽을 지켜보고 있어서 정상궤도에 있음”(We are on track for more than half of the world’s population to follow the Olympic Games Paris 2024)이라고 언급하였다고 합니다.
그리고 나서 Bach IOC위원장은 화제가 되고 있는 복싱, 그리고 Yu-ting Lin(TPE/대만: 57 kg) 및 Imane Khelif(ALG/알제리: 66 kg)와 같은 여자부 복서들 에게는 계속되는 소란 거리에 대하여 견해를 피력하였다고 합니다.
기자들의 15가지 질문 중 9가지가 이와 관련 된 것이었는데 Bach IOC위원장의 첫 질문에 대한 답변 중 ‘IOC가 이러한 것을 멈추기 위해 무엇을 해야 하나?’는 가장 통찰력 있는 내용이었는데(what can the IOC do to stop this – was the most insightful) “이 화두를 멈추는 것은 우리보다 여러분 기자 양반들에게 달려 있소이다”(To put an end to it is more up to you than up to us.)라고 하고 나서 “ 여기서 확실히 해 둡시다. 우리는 여자 복싱에 대하여 이야기 하고 있는 바 우리는 여자로 태어난 2명의 복서들이 여자로 성장하였으며 여성 여권을 소지하고 있고 오랫동안 여자 복서로 경기에 출전하여 왔소. 이것이 여성이라는 명확한 정의인 것이오”(Let's be very clear here. We are talking about women's boxing. We have two boxers who were born as a woman. They have been raised as a woman. Who have a passport as a woman. And who have competed for many years as woman. And this is the clear definition of a woman.)
“그들이 여성성에 대하여 의혹이 제기된 적이 결코 없어 왔소. 우리가 지금 보고 있는 것은 몇몇 사람들이 여자의 정의에 대하여 스스로 만들어 가고 싶다라는 것이오. 그리고 나로서는 그들을 과학적 기반에 의거한 여성에 대한 새로운 정의와 누군가 어떻게 태어나서 성장해서 경기에 출전하고 여성 여권을 소지한 사람이 여자로 간주될 수 없는지에 대한 과학적 기반을 들여다 보라고 초대할 밖에 없는 것이오”(There was never any doubt about them being a woman. What we see now is that some want to own the definition of who is a woman. And there I can only invite them to come up with a scientific-based new definition of who is a woman, and how can somebody being born, raised, competed and having a passport as a woman, cannot be considered a woman.)
“만일 그들이 무언가를 가지고 온다면 우리는 경청할 준비가 되어 있으며 그것을 검토한 용의가 잇지만 우리는 정치적 동기와 때때로 정치적으로 동기화된 문화 전쟁에 참전하지는 않을 것이오(If they are coming up with something, we are ready to listen, we are ready to look into it, but we will not take part in a politically-motivated, sometimes politically-motivated, cultural war.)
“그리고 소셜 미디어에서 이 모든 증오 섞인 연설과 모든 공격과 비난 그리고 이 아젠더로 점화된 이러한 문맥에 대하여 어떠한 일이 진행되고 있는 사항이 전혀 용납 불가한 것이라는 것을 말하려 하오.”(And allow me to say that what is going on in this context in the social media, with all this hate speech, with all this aggression and accuse, and fueled by this agenda, is totally unacceptable.)
Bach IOC 위원장은 Khelif선수와 시합 중 46초 만에 퇴장한(who retired after 46 seconds of her bout with Khelif) Angela Carini의 코멘트에 대하여 주목하면서 “본인은 알제리 여자 복서와 시합을 가진 이태리 복서의 말을 인용하고 자 하오: 그녀는 말하기를 “여러분이 알다시피 이러한 논란은 정말 나를 슬프게 하였고 나와 시합하기 위해 이곳에 온 상대방 복서 에게 미안할 따름 임. 나는 Kjelif 선수에게 악 감정이 없으며 내가 다시 그녀를 만나면 안아 주고 싶음”(I would also like to quote here, the Italian boxer, who was competing against the Algerian female boxer, she said: “You know, these controversies have definitely made me sad and I feel sorry for my opponent, who is also only here to fight. I have nothing against Khelif. If I met her again, I would hug her.”)
“본인은 이러한 그녀의 코멘트가 모든 것을 잘 설명해 주고 있다고 생각하며 이것이 바로 올림픽 정신인 것이오. 여러분이 시합에서 이기든 지든 상대방에 대한 존중, 그리고 이 두 여성은 그 동안 많은 시합에서 지기도 하였소.”(I think this explains it all, and this is what the Olympic spirit is about. The respect for your opponent, whether you win or whether you lose, and by the way, both of these women have lost a number of fights.)
“Imane(알제리 선수)만해도 최근 몇 년간 국제복싱대회에서 9 차례나 패하였으며 이러한 것에 대한 이슈가 결코 없었소. 그녀는 심지어 이태리복싱연맹이 초청해서 이태리 동료 선수들과 이태리에서 연습한 바 있는데 그때도 이것에 대한 이슈가 없었소”(Imane alone has lost nine in international competitions in the recent years, and there was never an issue about this. She has even been invited by the Italian boxing federation to train with her Italian fellow athletes in Italy, and there was no issue about this.)
Bach IOC위원장은 혹 이번 소동이 아마도 러시아 측이 주동하여 파리 올림픽을 음해하려는 그릇된 정보살포캠페인의 일환이 아니냐는 질문에 대하여(asked if the noise on this issue was perhaps part of a Russian-backed disinformation campaign to try and hurt the Paris Games) “본인은 이것을 정확히 규정할 순 없지만 러시아 측 특히 많은 사유로 IOC가 인증을 취소해야만 했던 국제연맹[IBA]이 파리 올림픽 훨씬 전부터 프랑스와 IOC와 파리 올림픽에 反하는 명예실추목적의 일련의 행동을 저질러 온 것을 보아 왔으며 다시 반복해 보았자 오히려 그들을 치켜 세울 수 있어 반복하고 싶지 않음”(I cannot make this precise, but what we have seen from the Russian side, in particular, from the international federation from which we had to withdraw the recognition for many reasons [IBA], that they have undertaken, already way before these Games with a defamation campaign against France, against the Games, against the IOC, and they have made a number of comments in this respect which I do not want to repeat, to give them too much honor.)
“따라서 만일 여러분이 이러한 더 이상 인증되지 않고 있는 국제연맹으로부터 흘러나오는 정보의 신빙성에 대하여 알고 싶다면 본인은 여러분에게 제안하건 대 그들과 이 연맹의 수뇌주들이 최근 뇌까린 코멘트를 잘 들여다 보고나서 스스로 판단을 내리길 바라는 바임”(So if you want to have an idea about the credibility of information coming from this not-anymore-recognized international federation, I can only suggest to you, look into the comments they and the leaders of this federation have made recently, and then make your own judgement.)
이때 The Inquisitor 지에 글을 쓰고 있는 독일 탐사전문기자(German investigative reporter)인 Jens Weinreich가 질문을 하면서 IBA가 Kjelif 선수의자격을 박탈로 방향을 전환한 시점에 대하여 지적하면서(pointed to when the IBA pivoted to disqualify Khelif ) “2018년 이래로 국제적인 복싱 시합에 출전해 온 Imane Khelif는 IBA영역에서 러시아의 Azalia Amineva와 2023년 IBA세게여자복신선수권대회에서 16 라운드까지 이길 때까지 여자 선수로 등록되고 인정되어 온 바 있음”(Imane Khelif, who has been boxing internationally since 2018, was listed and tolerated as a woman in the realm of the IBA until she won in the [round of 16] against Russia's Azalia Amineva at the 2023 World Championships in New Delhi.)이라고 언급하였다고 합니다.
Khelif의 준준결승전과 준결승전까지의 승리 전적은 모두 몰수 되었으며(Khelif’s wins in the quarters and semis were taken away) 준결승전에서 패한 선수는 이에 대한 반대급부로 결승전에 전출한 바 있는데 Weinreich기자는 “이것이 바로 Kremlin이 주장하고 있는 지점 임”(This is where the Kremlin speaks)이라고 보도하였다고 합니다.
이에 대하여 Bach IOC위원장은 복싱과 올림픽에 대한 IOC의 입장에 대해 명백히 하면서 “우리는 복싱을 올림픽 정식종목으로 원하는 바요. 이것이 목표 라오. 하지만 복싱이 LA2028올림픽 정식종목으로 계속 유지되려면 IOC가 신뢰할 만한 파트너 국제연맹이 상존해야 하기 때문에 이제 각국복싱연맹들은 선택을 잘 해야 함. 따라서 그들에게 달려 있음.”(We want boxing in the program of the Olympic Games. This is the target. But the boxing can only be in the Olympic Games in L.A. if we have a reliable partner. So now the national boxing federations, they have to make their choice. It’s up to them.)
“만일 그들이 좋은 평판을 가지고 있고 좋은 지배구조를 가지고 있고 깨끗한 도핑방지정책을 가지고 있고 재정 투명성 조건을 충족하는 국제연맹 하에서 정정당당하게 올림픽에서 메달을 획득하기를 원한다면, IOC와의 파트너가 될 수 있는 국제연맹을 찾아야 할 것임. 그러한 선택을 각국복싱연맹의 손에 있으며 그들의 복싱 선수들이 메달을 획득하게 하고 싶다면 그리해야 할 것임”(If they want their athletes to win medals in Olympic Games, in a fair competition, with an international federation with a good reputation, with a good governance, with a clear anti-doping policy, with financial transparency, then they must found an international federation as a partner for the IOC. It is in their hands and for their athletes to win medals, if they want them to win medals.)이라고 조언하였다고 합니다.
