1. What are your main memories of Seoul 1988? (서울올림픽에서 주로 기억에 남는 것은?)

1) First thing that comes to mind is overall drastic change of city landscape; (첫 번째로 생각나는 것은 서울시 조경이 전반적으로 확~바뀌었다는 것)

(1) Construction of Seoul1988 City Express way(서울올림픽 도시고속도로 건설/”서울올림픽유산 제1호”)

(2) Han River Beautification job (한강 개발과 경관조성 및 치장/”서울올림픽유산 제2호”)

(3) A large scale of overall Construction of Seoul Olympic Village Apartments and Olympic Family Apartments and Media Village Apartments used as Accommodation of Athletes, Olympic Family and Media people from around the world, which created a huge domestic construction and related industry activation including job offering opportunities (서울올림픽선수촌, 올림픽 패밀리 및 미디어촌 숙소용도로 대 단지 복합아파트 건설-국내 건설 및 부대산업경기활성화와 일자리창출기회 제공/”서울올림픽유산 제3호”)

(4) Creation of Korean version of Hyde Park called “Seoul Olympic Park” which proved to be an optimal and outstanding choice as multi-purpose in-town citizens park for leisure and recreation and get-together landmark-legacy of Seoul 1988 Games(한국판 Hyde Park으로 손색이 없는 서울올림픽공원조성은 서울시민 레저-레크리에이션 등 다 목적 시민공원으로 쾌적하고 최적의 발상이며 “서울올림픽유산 제4호”로 자리매김)

(5) In the same perimeter are located not only Seoul Olympic Youthhostel which later upgraded as Seoul Olympic Parktel, but also SLOOC HQs. buildings have become a permanent home of KOC and NFs concerned as well as the main office of Seoul Olympic Sport Promotion Foundation which became a living legacy goose that lays a golden financial eggs to the Korea’s sport. (6) Korea National Sport University abbreviated as KNSU was also created just in the vicinity of Seoul Olympic Village Apartments area to give a boost and systematic support as upbringing efforts by the government for sport-oriented students as well as Korean athletes to get properly educated. This is another Living Legacy of Seoul 1988.(KNSU가 약자인 한국체육대학 엯 서울올림픽선수촌 인근에 정부주도의 국립대학으로 설립되었으며 설립목적은 체육지망학생들과 국가대표선수들에게 학업병행기회제공인데 이 또한 “서울올림픽의 유산 제6호”로 자리매김함)

2) Second of all, home soil athletes showcased their brilliant performances at the Games, having achieved world’s 4^th place in overall Olympic medal tally. (두 번째로, 개최국 안방선수들은 현란한 경기력을 발휘 총 금메달획득 순위 종합4위 달성)

3) Third of all, KBS TV as Host Broadcaster had secured and owned an IBC building, after the Games, which was constructed from the financial subsidy of one third of the total TV rights revenues for the Seoul Games. KBS have used this IBC building as its annex broadcasting complex all along the way. This is another living legacy of the Games. 2. Why do you think the Seoul 1988 Games were so successful? (서울올림픽이 그렇게 성공적이라고 생각하는 이유?)

1) First of all, at those times, the IOC and the global Olympic Movement had critically suffered in the wake of continued nightmares of three consecutive previous Games, which I call that boycott-plagued phenomenon as 3 M syndrome, namely Munich1972, Montreal1976 and Moscow1980. (첫째로, 그 당시 IOC 및 글로벌 올림픽운동은 1972년대회부터 보이콧이 팽배한 3M<Munchen1972-Montreal1976-Moscow1980> 신드롬의 3연타석 악몽으로 심각한 고난의 여정으로 타격을 받고 있었음)

2) In addition, LA1984 had also been affected and tarnished by Soviet-bloc boycott in retaliation of the US-Western bloc countries boycott of the Moscow1980. (게다가 LA1984올림픽 역시 Moscow1980미국 등 서방국가들의 보이콧에 대하여 소련 동구권 블록의 집단 보복 보이콧 영향으로 얼룩짐)

3) However, Seoul1988 was participated by 159 countries both from the East and West of the world, culminating the global Olympic Movement. (하지만 4년 뒤인 Seoul1988올림픽은 동서 양 진영에서 159개국이 참가함으로써 글로벌 올림픽운동의 최고점을 시작하는 분기점이자 전환점이 되었음)

4) The Seoul 1988 Games triggered the historic Reform and Openness (Perestroika and Glasnost by Gorbachev) resulting the 11 CIS countries independent from Soviet Union three years later in 1991. Therefore, on the basis of the evaluation of such tremendous contribution as described above, the Seoul Olympics deserves the Nobel Peace Prize as an eligible and creditable candidate on a retrospective basis. 5) The Seoul 1988 Games was also instrumental, as catalyst, in breaking down the wall of Brandenbrug Gate in Berlin, thus prompted the reunification of Germany in 1989. (서울올림픽은 독일 베를린 브란덴부르크 장벽을 무너뜨리게 하는 데 촉매제로 작용하여 대회 1년 후인 1989년 독일통일을 촉진한 바 있음)

6) Following the resounding success of global marketing in LA1984, the Seoul 1988 Games was the frontrunner to create the global TOP marketing program by the IOC thanks to its sustainable marketing success. (LA1984올림픽에서 반향을 일으킨 글로벌 마케팅 성공 후, 서울1988올림픽은 지속가능 한 마케팅 성공덕분에 IOC가 시동을 건 글로벌 TOP마케텡 프로그램 창출 선두주자가 되었음)

7) The Seoul Paralympic Games played a pivotal role in co-staging the Olympics and Paralympics together at one site at interval ever since. (서울 패럴림픽 대회를 기점으로 올림픽과 패럴림픽이 간격을 두고 한 장소에서 공동으로 개최되도록 정착하는데 중추적 역할을 하였음)
