[미국올림픽태권도 스타 성폭력(Sexual Abuse)혐의와중에 영구자격정지 선언 배경스케치]
9월8일자 한 외신에 따르면 미국올림픽 태권도 2관왕(two-time Olympic taekwondo champion)인 Steven Lopez선수는 “안전한 스포츠를 위한 미국센터”조사결과 아동성폭력 증거 확인 후(after a United States Centre for SafeSport investigation found evidence he sexually abused a child) 스포츠활동 영구 부적격 선언을 받았다(declared permanently ineligible from sport)고 합니다

동 센터는 Sydney2000 및 Athnes2004올림픽 금메달리스트인 39세의 Lopez선수가 가족친구이자 동료태권도 선수인 Nina Zampetti가 당시14세일때 성폭력 하였음을 입증하는 “증거의 우월성”(preponderance of evidence)이 존재한다고 언급하였다고 합니다.
세계태권도 선수권대회 5관왕이기도 한 Lopez선수는 혐의를 부인하고 있지만 Zampetti여자선수는 지금 그러한 것이 믿어지고 있음을 알게 되어 ‘기쁘다’(she is "glad" she is now being believed)고 언급하였다고 합니다
현재32세가 된 Zampetti선수는 USA Today지와의 인터뷰에서 다음과 언급하였다고 합니다:
A. "After all these years of trying to tell my family that he was not who they thought he was, the truth is finally out." (Lopez가 가족들이 생각하였던 그런 부류의 사람이 아니라고 가족에게 이야기하려고 시도하려 했던 이 모든 긴 세월이 지나고 나서야 마침내 진실이 밝혀지고 있음)

Steven Lope와 그의 태권도코치 역할을 해 온 형제인 Jean Lopez는 지난 3년 간 간통죄로 조사를 받아온 상태였는데(under investigation for sexual misconduct for the last three years) 첫 조사는 미국 태권도협회에 의해 그리고 나서 SafeSport 센터에 의해 조사 중이었다고 합니다.
SafeSport센터 측은 간통죄 그것도 미성년자와의 간통죄를 저질렀던 행위가 발각된 후(after finding he had committed violations of sexual misconduct and sexual misconduct involving a minor) Jean Lopez는 이미 지난 4월 영구자격정지 조치에 처해진 상태(permanently ineligible back in April)라고 선언하였다고 합니다.
하지만 4월 이래 영구금지처분은 철회(That permanent ban has since been rescinded)되었으며 Jean Lopez는 대신 한정적 제한조치를 받은 상태(under an interim restriction instead)라고 합니다
Steven Lopez의 변호사인 Howard Jacobs은 자신의 의뢰인(his client)이 금지조치에 대해 항소할 것(appeal against his own ban)이라고 언급하고 있다고 합니다.
그의 변호사인 Jacobs는 성명서를 통하여 다음과 같이 언급하였다고 합니다:

Meloon선수는 그녀와 Steven Lopez가 6년 간 간헐적으로 데이트 한 바 있다(dated on and off for six years)고 언급하였다고 합니다.
Meloon선수에 따르면, 2004년 Lopez부모집에서 물리적 충돌(a physical confrontation)이 있은 후 Steven Lopez선수가 그녀 뒤를 따라와 아파트 창문을 깨뜨리고 침입하여 그녀를 성폭력 하였다(Steven followed her to her flat, broke in through a window and sexually assaulted her)고 언급하였다고 합니다
Meloon은 Steven Lopez가 몇 차례 신체적 폭행을 가하기도 했다(also physically assaulted her on several occasions)고 언급하였다고 합니다
Mandy Meloon와Amber Means는 또 다른 2명의 여성과 함께 Lopez형제들과 미국올림픽위원회(USOC), 미국 태권도협회(USA Taekwondo) 및 SafeSport에 대한 소송을 제기(joined two other women in filing a lawsuit against the Lopez brothers, the US Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Taekwondo and SafeSport) 하였다고 합니다.
소송을 제기한 여성들은 자신들이 성 매매(sex trafficking) 작전의 희생자들(victims of a "sex trafficking" operation)이라고 부르짖고 있는데 그들의 주장내용을 보면 USOC와 USA 태권도협회가 Lopez형제들이 성 약탈자/포식자임을 알고 있었지만 전 세계에서 열린 태권도 캠프와 대회에 어린 여자선수들을 그들과 함께 계속해서 파견하였다는 것("sexual predators" yet continued to send young women with them to camps and competitions across the world)이라고 합니다.
