"Hello, PyeongChang

Dear Olympic fans around the world

Your Excellency, Moon Jae-in, President of the Republic of Korea,

Your Excellency, Antonio Guterres, Secretary general of the United Nations

Excellencies,

Dear athletes

Dear members of the Olympic family,

Ladies and gentlemen.

Welcome to the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018!

This is the moment that we have all been waiting for: the first Olympic Games on snow and ice in the Republic of Korea.

This is the moment that the Organising Committee, the public authorities and so many Korean people have been working for with great dedication and commitment. You all can be very proud tonight.

Now is the time for PyeongChang!

Thank you to everyone who has made this moment possible.

My special thanks go to the thousands of volunteers who have welcomed us so warmly:

Thank you, volunteers.

Dear athletes, now, its your turn!

This will be the competition of your life.

Over the next days, the world will be looking to you for inspiration.

You will inspire us all to live together in peace and harmony despite all differences we have.

You will inspire us by competing for the highest honour in the Olympic spirit of excellence, respect and fair play.

You can only really enjoy your Olympic performance if you respect the rules, and stay clean.

Only then will your lifelong memories be the memories of a true and worthy Olympian.

While you compete with each other, you live peacefully together in the Olympic Village, respecting the same rules, sharing your meals and your emotions with your fellow athletes.

This is how you show that in sport we are all equal.

This is how you show the unique power of sport to unite people.

A great example of this unifying power is the joint march here tonight of the two teams from the National Olympic Committees of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. We thank you.

30년 전 역대 올림픽 중 최고의 올림픽으로 사마란치 IOC위원장이 칭송한 당시 서울올림픽 개회식에서 폐회식까지 영문으로 요약 스케치하여 공유합니다.

The Games of the 24th Olympiad Seoul began on 17 September 1988 with gala Opening Ceremonies a Seoul’s Olympic Main Stadium.

They were the results of seven year-long preparations of hard works since the IOC chose Seoul as an Olympic Host City in 1988 at Baden-Baden, (West) Germany on 30 September 1981.

Staged amid some 100,000 spectators and with billions of global citizens as tele-spectators, the Opening Ceremonies were packed with touching moments.

After parading by boat on the Han River, the Dragon Drum Procession came into view at 10:30 a.m., dancers performed rhythmic dance harmonizing ancient times and global solidarity, while a mass games enhanced the festive mood.

The official events of the Opening Ceremonies started when 13,304 athletes and officials from 160 countries marched into the Seoul Olympic Main Stadium.

The SLOOC President PARK She-Jik spoke to the crowd, and the IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch delivered a welcoming address. President ROH Tae-Woo then declared the Seoul Olympic Games (to be) open.

The sacred Olympic flame, carried from the Temple of Hera in ancient Olymia, Greece, ignited the torch at the Main Stadium’s huge cauldron.

The spectators were treated to seven programs:

(1) “A Great Day”,

(2) “Chaos”,

(3) “Beyond All Barriers”,

(4) “Silence”,

(5) “New Sprouts”,

(6) “Harmony”,

(7) “ One World”

The vocal group “Koreana” sang the Seoul Olympic song titled “Hand in Hand” to bring down the curtain on the Opening Ceremonies.

Perfect facilities, fine weather, and dedicated services of volunteer workers combined to produce very successful Games of the 24th Olympiad Seoul 1988: during 16 days of heated competitions, athletes shattered 33 world and 227 Olympic records.

On 17 September 1988, five official sports (Boxing, Diving, Basketbll, Volleyball and Football), and Taekwondo as a demonstration sport were staged on the first day of the Games.

The 16 days of the Olympic competitions drew to a close, leaving behind memories of the countless human dramas which grew from the interaction of some 9,700 athletes from all parts of the world.

As the sacred Olympic flame was extinguished, the story of the Seoul Games became a matter for the history book:

“The World to Seoul, Seoul to the World.”

30년 전 그룹 Koreana가 서울1988올림픽 주제가로 부른 “Hand in hand’의 구성진 노랫말이 귓가에 쟁쟁합니다.

[Hand In Hand] (노래: Koreana)

(1)

See the fire in the sky

We feel the beating of our hearts together

This is our time to rise above
We know the chance is here to live forever

For all time

(Refrain: 후렴)

Hand in Hand we stand
All across the land
We can make this world
A better place in which to live

Hand in Hand we can
Start to understand
Breaking down the walls
That come between us for all time
Arirang

(2)

Every time we give it all.
We feel the flame eternally inside us.
Lift our hands up to the sky
The morning calm helps us to live in harmony
For all time

(Refrain: 후렴)

Hand in hand we stand.
All across the road we can make this world
A better place in which to live
Hand in Hand we can
Start to understand
Breaking down the walls
That come between us for all time
Arirang
