[대한민국 스포츠외교실록 “새로운 지평” 저서에 붙이는 서문]
평창2018 동계올림픽에서 평화로운 경쟁 속에서 스포츠로 연합된 세계를 우리가 함께 축하고 있었던 것이 마치 바로 어제 일처럼 느껴진다. 설상과 빙상에서 펼쳐진 올림픽 스포츠의 마력에 이끌려 세계 각국 선수들이 선보인 잊을 수 없는 경기장면들과 한국민들이 베풀어준 기막힌 환대의 추억은 영원히 내 가슴 속에서 살아 이어갈 것이다 평창2018동계올림픽은 또한 한반도로부터 전세계로 강력한 평화의 메시지를 전달하였다. 그 시점은 바로 대한민국과 조선민주주의인민공화국 곡가올림픽위원회가 출전시킨 선수들이 한반도 하나의 코리아통일기를 앞세우고 단일팀으로 올림픽스타디움으로 입장할 때 점화된 순간이었다. 이 한 순간에 스포츠가 지닌 독창적인 파워를 통하여 전세계를 평화로 모두가 연합됨을 세계만방에 보여준 것이었다. 나로서는 이것이야말로 올림픽의 가장 강력한 메시지라고 생각한다.평창에서의 이러한 강력한 상징적 표출을 통하여 어떻게 올림픽이 대화로 나아가는 길을 열어줄 수 있는 가에 대하여 지켜보게 된 것이다. 이 순간은 우연히 거저 생겨난 것이 아니었다. 그것은 2014년에 IOC가 착수하였으며 잊을 수 없는 대회 개회식 몇 시간 전까지 이어졌던 기나긴 협상과정 및 고위급 정부당국의 개입의 결실이었다. 우리는 스포츠 단독으로는 평화를 창출할 수 없음을 인지하고 있다. 하지만 우리가 평창에서 목격 하였듯이 올림픽이 보다 평화로운 미래로 가는 길을 열어줄 수 있는 것이다. 평화로운 경기를 통해 전세계를 하나로 묶어주는 이러한 스포츠의 힘이야말로 대한민국에서의 올림픽운동의 역사를 연대기로 엮어 풀어줌으로써 통찰력이 살아 숨쉬는 저서를 통해 널리 알리는 핵심 테마인 것이다. 한국인들과의 내 개인적인 연대는 서울1988올림픽 기간 동안 시작되었다. 그 당시 본인은 올림픽대회 운영위원회에 선수대표역할을 수행하였다. 한국인들과 한국문화에 이처럼 일찍이 접촉하였던 덕분에 그러한 훌륭한 인상이 지속적으로 유지되어 오늘날에 이르렀다. 이러한 맥락에서 본인은 한국 스포츠를 이끌어가는 지도자급인사이자 이 책 저자이기도 한 ‘로키 윤강로’(Rocky Kang-Ro Yoon)를 알게 되었고 또한 고맙게 여기게 된 계기라고 할 수 있다. 저자인 ‘로키 윤강로’는 자신에 경험하고 체득한 올림픽운동에 대한 엄청난 지식의 바탕 위에서 대한민국 스포츠 역사에 대하여 그가 목격하고 체득한 수 많은 사례와 스포츠를 통하여 이 세계가 보다 더 나은 곳으로 승화되도록 하는 스포츠역할론에 대하여 지혜로운 통찰로 책 내용을 풀어 펼쳐 함께 공유할 수 있는 역량의 소유자로 이상적인 인물이다. 미래를 디자인 및 구체화하기 위하여서는 과거를 이해할 필요가 있다. 이러한 관점에서 이 책이 시의 적절한 기여를 할 수 있는 지침서로써 과거의 교훈을 통해 우리의 향후 길을 닦아 나아갈 차세대 스포츠지도자들을 고무시켜주고 미래 지향점을 부각시켜주기에 충분한 이유이다.

[Foreword for True Records and Stories of Korea Sport Diplomacy “The New Horizons”]
It only seems like yesterday that we were celebrating a world united by sport in peaceful competition at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018. The magic of Olympic sport on snow and ice, the unforgettable performances by the athletes and the wonderful hospitality of the Korean people and will live on in our hearts forever.The Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 also sent a powerful message of peace from the Korean Peninsula to the world. That moment came when the athletes from the National Olympic Committees of the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea entered the Olympic stadium as one team, behind one flag, the Korean Unification flag. This one moment demonstrated the unique power of sport to unite the whole world in peace. To me, this is the most powerful message of the Olympic Games. With these powerful symbols in PyeongChang, we have seen how the Olympic Games can open the way to dialogue. This moment did not happen by chance. It was the result of a long process of negotiations and high-level government engagement by the International Olympic Committee that began back in 2014 and lasted until a few hours before this unforgettable Opening Ceremony. We know that sport alone cannot create peace. But as we saw in PyeongChang, the Olympic Games can open the way to a more peaceful future. This power of sport to unite the world in peaceful competition is a central theme in this insightful book that chronicles the history of the Olympic Movement in the Republic of Korea. My personal connection with the Korean people began during the Olympic Games Seoul 1988. At the time, I was the athletes' representative on the Games' steering committee. This early contact with the Koreans and the Korean culture left a lasting impression on me that continues to this day. It is in this context that I got to know and appreciate Rocky Kang-Ro Yoon as a leading figure in Korean sport. Building on his great knowledge on the Olympic Movement, he is ideally placed to share his many accounts of the rich Korean sporting history and the role that sport can play to make the world a better place. In order to shape the future, one needs to understand the past. This is why this book is a timely contribution to inspire the next generation of sport leaders with the lessons of the past, as they shape our way forward.
