Thomas Bach IOC위원장은 독일정부가 Munich 1972올림픽 당시 이스라엘 대표팀을 대상으로 벌인 테러공격을 둘러싼 이벤트에 대한 조사에 착수하겠다(to set up an investigation into the events surrounding the terrorist attack on the Israeli Olympic team during the Munich 1972 Olympics )는 독일정부의 결정을 환영하였다고 합니다.
Bach IOC위원장은 “이 시간 동안 많은 것들이 어둠 속에 묻혀 왔음. 우리는 이러한 사건 진상에 대한 암흑이 망각이나 무관심으로 흘러가게 놔두어서는 안되는 것임(Much has remained in the dark during this time. We must not allow this darkness to be followed by amnesia and indifference)이라고 50년 전 오늘(9월5일)아침 짧은 시간에 인질로 잡혔던 이스라엘 선수들에 대한 구출 시도가 비극적으로 잘못 흘러갔던 장소(the place where an attempted rescue of Israeli athletes held hostage went tragically wrong in the small hours of the morning exactly 50 years ago today)인 Furstenfeldbruck Airport 공항에서 가진 추모기념행사에서 주장하였습니다.
Bach IOC위원장의 메시지는 일찌감치 사건진상완전공개를 촉구한 독일연방정부 대통령 Frank Walter의 메시지에 화답하면서 “우리는 독자적으로 구성된 위원회가 당시 독일정부관련기관들의 관련 행위를 둘러싼 어두운 부분에 대해 확연히 밝혀 주리라는 사실을 환영한 바임”(We welcome the fact that an independent commission is to shed full light on the darkness surrounding the actions of state agencies) “만일 우리가 이러한 진실규명확인에 관련 정보를 통해 어떤 식으로나 기여할 수 있다면 그리 할 것임”(If we can in any way contribute to this clarification with information, we shall do so)이라고 약속하였습니다.
그는 당시 테러공격을 “올림픽역사상 가장 어두운 날”(darkest day in Olympic history)이며 “비겁한 공격”(cowardly attack)이러고 묘사하였습니다.
Bach IOC위원장은 “우리는 11명의 이스라엘 선수 희생자들과 독일 경찰관의 친척들의 아픔을 함께 나누는 바임” (We share the pain of the relatives of the 11 Israeli victims and the German policeman) “이러한 아픔은 그들이 올림픽에서 그들의 생명을 잃었기 때문에 더욱더 고통의 정도가 깊은 것임”(This pain is all the deeper because those loved ones lost their lives at the Olympic Games) “오늘날까지 그러한 야만적 공격은 우리를 공포와 수치심의 도가니로 몰아 놓고 있으며 우리가 애도를 표명하지만 그것이 자신의 아들, 형제, 아버지, 사랑하는 사람 혹은 그들의 삶에 대한 사랑 마저도 빼앗겨 버린 가족들의 고통을 치유하기는 좀처럼 쉽지 않은 것임” (To this day, that barbaric attack fills us with horror, shame and disgust and yet our condolences can hardly ease the pain of the families who lost their son, brother, father, beloved spouse or love of their lives to this cowardly attack) “오늘, 다시 한번, 우리는 희생자들의 영예와 애도와 깊은 존경심의 표시로서 우리의 고개를 숙이는 바임”(Today, once more, we bow our heads as a mark of honour, tribute and deep respect for the victims) “ 우리는 그 인척들과 함께 그 처절한 심정에 공감하는 바임. 우리는 이스라엘 팀의 살해된 구성원들에 대한 비통함과 애통함은 우리 올림픽 공동체의 한 부분으로 함께 하였으며, 지금도 그러하고 앞으로도 그렇게 남아 있을 것임”(We empathise with the relatives. We share their grief, the murdered members of the Israeli Olympic team were, are and will remain part of our Olympic community)이라고 처절한 심정을 표현하였습니다.
과거 올림픽 의식을 통해서 구체적 애도의 의미로 테러공격을 상기시키는 캠페인은 있어 왔었지만 최근까지 올림픽에서 묵념 시간이 주어지는 경우가 일반적인 성격이었습니다.
Bach IOC위원장은 2021년 여름철에 연기되어 열린 Tokyo2020올림픽에서의 애도의 임팩트를 강조하면서 “올림픽의 의미는 정치적이거나 문화적인 차이에 상관 없이 모든 우리의 다양성 안에서 인류의 단합을 평화롭게 축하하는 것임(The meaning of the Olympic Games is the peaceful celebration of the unity of humankind in all our diversity, regardless of political or cultural differences.) “이러한 이유로 그러한 공격 역시 올림픽과 올림픽 가치에 대한 공격 이었음”(For this reason, the attack was also an attack on the Olympic Games and the Olympic values) “Tokyo2020올림픽 개회식에서 행한 전세계 수 백만명의 사람들과 공유된 묵념의 시간은 감동적인 것으로 명명백백 하였음(The minute of silence shared with hundreds of millions of people all over the world during the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 made this movingly clear)
Bach IOC위원장은 이스라엘올림픽위원회의 노력을 치하하였으며 1972년 뮌핸올림픽에서 희생된 선수들 중 Andrei의 미망인인 Ankie Spitzer에게도 감사했습니다.
Ankie Spitzer는 당시 사망한 희생자들 가족을 대신하여 지칠 줄 모르게 캠페인을 전개해(a tireless campaigner) 온 바 있습니다.
Bach IOC위원장은 “어떠한 의식이라도 우리를 짓누른 애통함과, 고통과 의혹과 불확실성으로 점철된 50년을 잊게 할 수는 없을 것임” (No ceremony can make us forget 50 years of grief, pain, doubt and uncertainty) “이러한 끔찍한 상실감에도 불구하고 친척들이나 이스라엘올림픽위원회도 올림픽에 등을 돌리지 않았음”(Despite this terrible loss, neither the relatives nor the National Olympic Committee of Israel turned their backs on the Games) “그들은 언제나 우리에게 그들의 손을 펼쳐 줌으로 Tokyo2020과 Rio2016올림픽이 고귀 하도록 협조하여 주었음”(They have always extended their hands to us, making the dignified commemorations at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 possible) “이러한 의미에서 우리는 그들에게 영원히 감사하는 바임”(For this, we are forever grateful to them)이라고 술회하였습니다.
