[로마 2024올림픽유치 중도포기 확정]

 

10월7일자 한 외신 제목은 “로마 시장 2024년 올림픽유치신청파일 제출하였음에도 불구하고 올림픽유치철회서한 IOC로 보내다”(Rome Mayor writes to IOC to withdraw bid for 2024 Olympics even though candidature file delivered)였습니다.

 

Virginia Raggi 로마 시장은 이태리 올림픽유치관계자들이 유치후보도시파일의 두 번째 서류를 이미 IOC에 제출하였음에도 불구하고 로마의 2024년 올림픽 및 패럴림픽 유치를 철회하는(withdrawing its bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games)뜻을 담은 서한을 IOC로 보낸 것으로 알려졌습니다.

 

Raggi 시장은 이태리 수도인 로마가 올림픽행사 유치경쟁에서 빠진다(the capital city was pulling out of the race for the event)는 사실을 알리는 단 6줄 짜리 편지(a six-line letter)를 보냈다고 합니다

 

하지만 Rome2024올림픽유치위원회 사무국장인 Diana Bianchedi 은 10월7일 자정(required by midnight)이 제출마감시간에 맞추기 위해 필요서류 전달 차 IOC본부로 출장 차 도착하였다고 전해 집니다.

 

IOC로서는 유치당사지인 해당도시의 지원이 없이(without the support of the city) 유치활동을 계속하도록 허용할 가능성을 없어 보이는 것(would appear unlikely)으로 알려졌습니다.

IOC로부터 로마2024 의 유치철회사실이 확인된다면 2024올림픽유치경쟁은 이제 Budapest, LA 및 Paris 단 3개 도시만 남게 되는 상황이 됩니다.

 

IOC는 2017년 9월13일 제130차 IOC총회 첫 날 2024년 올림픽개최도시를 투표로 선정하게 됩니다.

 

이러한 Rome2024의 올림픽유치철회사실이 놀라울 일은 아닌 것은 로마시의회가 지난 주 Raggi시장의 로마올림픽유치반대에 대하여 찬성 투표를 한 바 있기 때문입니다.

Raggi시장은 Five Star Movement 라는 정당소속 정치인(politician)으로 로마유치위원회의 2024년 올림픽개최권획득 시도에 대해 줄 곳 반대의견을 표출하였었으며 지난 9월에는 로마의 2024년 올림픽 유치노력에 대해 ‘무책임한 처사’(irresponsible)라고 성명서를 내면서 지지하지 않을 것임을 재차 확인한 바 있습니다.

 

로마시의회는 동 사안관련 지난 주(9월 말) 찬반투표를 실시하였는데 30-12로 로마시장의 손을 들어 줌으로 로마올림픽유치가 그 명운을 다한 것으로 보인 바 있습니다(leaving the bid appearing doomed)

 

Thomas Bach IOC 위원장과 Giovanni Malagò 이태리올림픽위원회(CONI)위원장 간의 회동이 지난 9월27일 있었는데 그 자리에서 로마의 2024년 올림픽유치의 궁지에 처한 입장(the bid’s plight)이 토의된 것으로 알려졌습니다.

그 후에 발표된 바에 따르면 CONI는 10월11일(화)로마에서 기자회견을 열 것이며 자세한 속 사정 정보는 그때까지 공개되지 않을 것(will reveal no further information before then)으로 알려지고 있습니다.

Raggi시장의 올림픽유치반대는 주로 재정적인 이유로 알려져 있는데 그녀는 정치인으로서 올림픽 이외에 산적한 다른 프로젝트 사업들이 훨씬 더 투자가치가 있는 것으로 주장하여 온(insisting other projects were more deserving of the money) 바 있습니다

 

IOC의 성명서에 따르면 다음과 같다고 합니다:

 

"The IOC has received today the second candidature files from all four 2024 Candidature Committees, including Rome 2024. (IOC는 오늘 부로 로마2024를 포함한 4개유치후보도시들로부터 두 번 째 유치후보파일을 접수하였음)

 

"The IOC is aware of the situation in Rome and is still in contact with the National Olympic Committee and the Candidature Committee Rome 2024 to hear about their position following the decision of the City Council.(IOC는 로마의 상황을 알고 있으며 로마시의회 결에 따른 그들의 입장을 청취하기 위하여 이태리 NOC/CONI 및 로마유치위원회와 아직 접촉 중에 있음)

 

"However, the IOC will continue to work in close collaboration with each Candidate City to provide them with the best possible services and assistance in the lead-up to the election, by the full IOC Membership, of the Host City at the 130th IOC Session in Lima, Peru, in 2017." (하지만 IOC는 2017년 9월13일 제130차 IOC총회에서 IOC위원전체가 참여하는 2024년 올림픽개최도시선정 때에 이르기까지 후보도시들에게 가능한 최선의 서비스와 지원을 제공하기 위하여 긴밀한 공조체제로써 업무에 계속 임할 것임)
