<인생찬가(A Psalm of Life) / 롱휄로우>
내게 말하지 마시게, 청승맞은 어조로,
인생이란 고작 텅 빈 꿈일뿐이라고!
왜냐하면 잠든 영혼은 죽어있는 것과 다름없고, 사물은 겉보기와는 다르기 때문아니겠는가?
인생은 현실 그 자체요, 또 인생은 진지하다네!
무덤이 곧 인생의 목적지는 아니지 않는가.
너는 티끌이니, 티끌로 돌아가란 말은 영혼을 두고 한 말은 아닐진저.
즐거움도 슬픔마저도 우리의 운명지어진 목적이나 가야하는 길은 아니라네.
하지만 행동함으로써 우리는 매번 내일이 오늘보다 더 앞서 전진하고 있다는 걸 알게 되는 거라네.
예술은 길고, 시간은 쏜살과 같다네.
그리고 우리네 심장이란 굳세고 용감하긴 하네만,
여전히 가죽으로 덮인 북마냥, 무덤 길을 재촉하는 행진곡을 울려대고 있을 뿐이라네.
세상이란 이름의 넓디넒은 싸움터에서, 또 인생의 야영지에서 조차 말일세,
우리는 말도 못하고, 그저 이리저리 쫓겨 다니기만 하는 소떼처럼 굴지 말아야 한다네!
쟁취하면서 영웅이 되어 보아야 하질 않겠나!
미랠랑 믿지 마시게, 아무리 흥겹고 즐겁게 다가올 지라도!
이미 죽어 버린 과거는 그냥 죽게 내버려 두시게!
행동하세, - 살아 숨쉬고 있는 현재의 삶속에서!
우리 내면엔 고동치는 심장이 건재하고, 머리위론 신이 보호해 주고 계시질 않는가!
위대한 사람들의 생애의 모든 것이 우리를 일깨워 주고 있다네.
우리의 인생은 장엄하게 만들어 갈 수 있는 것이라고,
또한, 훗날 훌훌 털고 떠나면서, 시간의 모래 위에 발자취를 남길 수 있는 것이라고.
발자국, 인생의 근엄한 바다 위를 헤쳐나간 아마 또 다른 항해자들이 남긴 자취 말일세.
고독하고 난파당한 형제가 보게 된다면, 이 또한 이들에게 다시금 용기를 북돋아 줄 발자국이 되지 않겠나?
자, 그러니 일어나 할 일을 하세나!
어떠한 운명도 감내할 마음을 추스리세!
여전히 성취하며, 한결 같이 추구하세나!
