[“My Way”노래의 원곡은 프랑스어로 “Comme d’habitude”/ As Usual /늘 그러하듯이) 가슴 아픈 처량한 샹송가사 탐구]

Frank Sinatra가 노래로 음반에 등록하여 히트 송이자 애창곡이 된 “My Way”란 노래는 원래 1967년 11월 프랑스 가수 Claude Francois의 자작곡 “Comme d’habitude”(As Usual/늘 그렇듯이)를 발표하였다고 합니다.

이 노래를 캐나다 출신의 유명 가수 Paul Anka가 프랑스 남부에서 휴가를 보내던 중 우연히 듣고 이 곡이 마음에 들었는지 바로 파리로 날아가 사용계약을 맺었다고 합니다.

영어 가사는 Paul Anka가 직접 썼지만, 프랑스어 원곡은 일상생활의 권태로 시들어가는 처량한 사랑에 관한 노래(Chanson)인 반면 “My Way”는 죽음을 눈앞에 둔 한 남자가 자신의 인생을 뒤돌아보며, 소신껏 살아온 자신의 인생에 아무 후회가 없다고 말하는 내용입니다

이후 Paul Anka가 영문가사를 별도로 만들어 “My way”라는 곡명으로 자신의 서명을 붙여 Frank Sinatra의 생일 선물로 헌정한 것을 1년 뒤인 1968년 12월30일 Frank Sinatra가 녹음하여 다시 1년 뒤인 1969년 11월 발표한 것으로 알려졌습니다.

“My Way”는 Paul Anka의 서명 곡(Signature Song)이지만 Frank Sinatra의 노래로 음반에 등록함으로 그의 노래가 되어 버린 셈입니다.

그래서 원 자작곡을 발표한 프랑스 가수 Claude Francois의 같은 곡조지만 다른 프랑스 노래 제목과 가사를 먼저 소개하고자 합니다.

영어책을 읽다가 유난히 문장이 길다 보면 짜증나고 해석하기도 애매한 경우가 종종 생긴다.

그 긴 영어문장을 번역하라고 하면 더욱 더 그러하리라.

그러나 마음을 추스리고 그 문장이 표현하고자 하는 메시지와 함께 호흡하면서 읽어 내려가고 번역하다 보면 의의로 재미가 쏠쏠하게 생기고 영어와 한국어 간의 어휘대비로 인한 문화적 언어학적 다양함도 느낄 수 있다.

그 영어 문장 속 장면에 몰입하다 보면 그 장면 속으로 빨려 들어가  함께 호흡하면서 그 장면 속의 일부 구성원 내지 주인공처럼 느껴지기도 한다. 

다음 글은 학창시절 배웠던 "큰 바위의 얼굴"이란 소설과 "주홍글씨" 등으로 유명한 미국의 작가 나다니엘 호손(Nathaniel Hawthorne)이 "주홍글씨" 에서 "실개천"(streamlet)묘사내용 중 일부다. 



Thus conversing, they entered sufficiently deep into the wood to secure themselves from the observation of any casual passenger along the forest-track.

이렇게 대화를 나누면서 그들은 숲숙 아주 아주 깊숙히 들어갔는데 그 이유는 오솔길(둘레길)을 따라 어쩌다 나타나는 행인들의 눈에 띄지 않도록 시야차단확보를 하기 위해서였다.

Here they sat down on a luxuriant heap of moss; which, at some epoch of the preceding century, had been a gigantic pine, with its roots and trunk in the darksome shade, and its head aloft in the upper atmosphere.

그들은 이끼가 현란하게 뒤덮인 더미에 앉았다. 그 더미는 어느 지나간 시대인가 거대한 소나무였었을 것이다.

It was a little dell where they had seated themselves, with a leaf-strewn bank rising gently on either side, and a brook flowing through the midst, over a bed of fallen and drowned leaves.

The trees impending over it had flung down great branches, from time to time, which choked up the current, and compelled it to form eddies and black depths at some points; while, in its swifter and livelier passages, there appeared a channel-way pebbles, and brown, sparkling sand.

시냇가에 닿아 있는 나무들은 때때로 큰 가지들은 늘어뜨려 물의 흐름을 가로막았고 그 때문에 소용돌이와 검은 여울이 생겨났다.
한편 물살이 더 빨라지고 더 활기차게 물길을 만들자 도랑길 자갈과 갈색의 번쩍이는 모래가 그 자태를 드러났다. 

Letting the eyes follow along the course of the stream, they could catch the reflected light from its water, at some short distance within the forest, but soon lost all traces of it amid the bewilderment of tree-trunks and underbrush, and here and there a huge rock, covered over with gray lichens.

시냇물 흐름을 따라 시선을 흘러보내면서 그들은 숲속 지근거리에서 물에 반사되는 빛을 감지할 수 있었다.
그렇지만  얼마 안가서 나무줄기와 덤불, 여기저기에 잿빛 이끼 낀 커다란 바위가 시야를 어지럽히는 바람에 이전 풍경의 흔적들을 놓치고 말았다.

All these giant trees and boulders of granite seemed intent on making a mystery of the course of this small brook; fearing, perhaps, that, with its never-ceasing loquacity, it should whisper tales out of the heart of the old forest whence it flowed, or mirror its revelations on the smooth surface of a pool.

이 모든 거대한 나무들과 화강암 둥근 돌들을 동원해서 이 작은 시냇물은 그 흐름자체를 비밀스럽게 간직하려고 작정한 듯 보였다.
아마도 쉴새 없이 소리내어 흐르면서 수다를 떨수 밖에 없는 시냇물의 천성으로 인해 흐르면서부터 간직해 온 오래된 숲의 숨겨놓은 이야기들을 속삭이거나, 여울의 매끈한 표면위에 그 숲의 비밀스런 사연들이 비춰지면 어쩌나 하는 두려움을 토로하는 듯 느껴졌다.  

Continually, indeed, as it stole onward, the streamlet kept up a babble, kind, quiet, soothing, but melancholy, like the voice of a young child that was spending its infancy without playfulness, and knew not how to be merry among sad acquaintance and events of sombre hue.

사실 끊임 없이 흘러내려가면서 실개천은 재잘거리고 친절하게 잔잔히 달래는 듯 보였지만 어딘가 모르게 우울해 보이기도 했다.
마치 슬픔에 잠긴 주변 친척들과 음울한 색조를 띤 사건들 가운데 있다보니 즐거워 할 줄 도 몰랐고 그래서 재때 놀아보지도 못하고 유년기를 보내고 있던 어린 아이의 음성과 흡사했다.

봄날이 왔긴 왔는는데 낮에는 여름날 같기도 하네요.

그래서 오늘은 셰익스피어(William Shakespeare:1564~1616)의  "그대를 비유해 볼까요?"란 시 한 소절 소개해 봅니다.

"Shall I compare Thee?"                                              "그대를 비해 볼까요?"

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?                             그대를 여름날에 비해 볼까요?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate:                      그대가 훨씬 더 아름답고 상냥스러워라.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,            거친 바람은 5월의 봉긋한 꽃봉오리를 흔들어대고,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:            여름이 거처하는 기간은 왜 이다지도 짧기만 한지요.
