[올림픽콘돔(Condom)현장경험담(When Condom Meets with the Olympics)]
아래 글은 2006년 필자의 첫 저서인 “총성 없는 전쟁”편과 2007년 당시 평창2014동계올림픽유치위원회 국제사무총장 재직 시절 제가 영어로 써서 출간하고 전세계 IOC위원들, 국제연맹회장 단 및 주요 국 NOC위원장들에게 배포한 바 있는”When Sport Meets the World Over Five Rings”라는 영어책 내용 중 “When Condom Meets the Olympics”이라는 소제목을 통해 필자의 경험담과 견해를 서술한 내용입니다:
[올림픽 콘돔 이야기(When Condom meets Olympics)]
필자의 기억으로는 올림픽대회에 콘돔이 공식적으로 처음 등장한 것은 1994년 노르웨이 릴레함메르(Lillehammer)에서 개최된 제17회 동계올림픽부터다.
신성하다고까지 생각했던 올림픽대회에서, 그것도 선수들의 보금자리인 올림픽선수촌(Olympic Village)에서, 그리고 자국의 국위선양은 물론 개개인의 명예와 영광을 위해 올림픽정신으로 무장하여 페어플레이(Fair Play)를 펼치며 경기에 임해야 할 당사자인 각국 대표선수들을 대상으로 올림픽 조직위가 공식적으로 콘돔을 사용토록 조장하고 배포한다는 사실에 아연실색하지 않을 수 없었다.
「남녀칠세부동석」의 성 의식이 몸에 배어 있는 「동방예의지국」의 가치판단기준으로는 확실히 충격(Shocking) 그 자체였다.
대한민국 선수들의 요람이자 합숙훈련장인 태릉선수촌에서 남·여 구분된 별도의 숙소를 쓰고 남·여 선수들의 공공연한 교제도 터부시하던 우리 선수들의 경우에는 더욱 그랬으리라.
물론 태릉선수촌에서 남녀대표선수들 간 로맨스(Romance)가 이루어지고 있다는 소문은 접한 바 있지만 만리타국에서 4년간 갈고 닦은 기량을 세계무대에서 선보여, 국가와 개인의 명예를 추구해야 할 올림픽 선수들이 과연 그러할까 의문이 제기되었다.
필자는 실제상황 점검 차 올림픽선수촌숙소지역(Residential Zone) 내에 위치한 의무실(Medical Clinic)을 방문하였다. 거기서 자원봉사자인 듯한 노르웨이 여성에게 “호기심 반, 의구심 반”으로 올림픽 선수촌 안에 콘돔이 존재하고 배포하느냐고 물어보았더니 빙그레 웃으며 몇 개가 필요하냐고 되물으면서 그 충격적인 콘돔을 꺼내 보이는 것이었다.
문화적 충격이라는 말은 그럴 때를 대비해서 있는 말이었다.
그야말로 「올림픽 콘돔」과 처음 상봉한 순간이었다. 그 올림픽 콘돔은 릴레함메르 마스코트와 로고가 사각 형태로 예쁘고 앙증맞게 각인된 채 포장되어 있었다. 무늬와 색상도 선명하고 과감했다. 그것은 필자의 신성한(?) 손위로 날름 올려졌다. 발음하기도 쑥스러웠던 콘돔이 올림픽과의 동거를 선언한 순간이기도 했다. (When Condom meets Olympics.)
그 역사적인 올림픽 콘돔(필자는 하루에 1인당 3개까지 배급한다고 해서 3개를 받았다.) 배 포사실을 한국 선수단에게 홍보(?)할 수 없는 노릇이어서 필자는 그냥 올림픽 기념품으로 간직하고 돌아와 필자가 2004년 연 아시아 최초의 개인스포츠박물관인 평산스포츠박물관에 전시하기로 했다. 그것은 아직도 올림픽 로고와 함께 고색창연한 자태를 뽐내고 있다.
올림픽 관련 질문 및 발언에 관한 한 주제별 영역에 관계없이 무불통지의 경지로 아직까지 세계기록을 보유하고 있는 필자지만 각종 국제대회에서 올림픽 콘돔에 대해서만은 아직 한마디 언급도 하지 않은 상태라는 것을 밝혀두고 싶다. 이러한 사실이 공개되어 아직도 이러한 사실을 모르고 있을지도 모르는 여러 국가의 순진무구한 올림픽참가선수들로 하여금 올림픽 선수촌 내에서 혹은 분위기 좋은 곳에서 언제든지 콘돔을 사용하고 싶은 충동을 느끼게 하는 「풍기문란방조죄」를 짓고 싶지 않기 때문이다.
1994 릴레함메르올림픽에서 시작된 에이즈 방지(Anti-AIDS) 목적의 올림픽 콘돔 배포는 다음 대회인 1998년 제18회 일본 나가노동계올림픽에서도 계속되어 올림픽지식전달프로그램(Olympic Games Knowledge Transfer Program)의 일환으로 올림픽선수촌 내 의무실을 통해 배포되었다.
2000년 시드니올림픽에서는 비공식 집계를 갖고 있던 한 조직위 관계자가 세계적인 위생용품 기업인 안셀(Ansell)에서 시드니올림픽 선수촌으로 공수했던 10만 개의 콘돔이 폭발적인 인기를 얻어 며칠 만에 동나자 추가로 40만 개를 긴급 공수했다고 알려주었다. 올림픽대회 참가선수 1만 5백 명과 임원진을 포함 약 1만 5천 명이 올림픽 참가 인원이었는데 이것을 나누어 보면 1인당 33개를 사용했다는 통계를 얻게 된다. 만약 선수들만 사용하였다고 가정한다면 1인당 약 50개씩 사용했다는 결론이다. 비공식이고 통계상의 수치이므로 꼭 믿을 필요는 없겠지만 엄청난 개수임에는 틀림없다.
올림픽 성문화와 에이즈퇴치 운동의 절묘하고 기가 막힌 타이밍이 주된 원인 중의 하나이리라.
쿠베르탱 남작이 들으면 격세지감, 대경실색, 아연실색, 경천동지, 오호통재일 것이다. 2006년 토리노올림픽에 참가했던 필자는 가히 폭발적이었던 올림픽 콘돔 사용실태와 추세에 대하여 수소문해 보았다. 그러나 필자는 정말 의외의 소식을 접했다. 올림픽 콘돔이 전혀 지급되지 않았다는 것이다. 호기심은 반드시 풀어야 하는 법!
필자와 친한 올림픽 고위관계자들에게 물어본 결과 올림픽 콘돔의 존재 자체도 모르는 경우가 대부분이었고, 심지어 평소 절친한 외신기자들에게 물어봐도 고개만 갸우뚱할 뿐이었다.드디어 무불통지의 모 스포츠지도자와 칵테일 회동 시 「올림픽 콘돔 토리노 현지 실종 이유」에 대한 궁금증을 풀 수 있었다. 추정 이유는 간단명료 그 자체였다. 「이탈리아는 가톨릭 국가다.」
2008년 베이징올림픽, 2010년 밴쿠버동계올림픽, 2012년 런던올림픽 등에서 올림픽 콘돔의 향방과 대책, 추이, 추세 그리고 그 실태는 어떻게 전개될 것인가?
“그것이 알고 싶다.”

As far as my memory goes, Olympic Condom made its debut at the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games.

As for me, it was a shocking cultural experience as I thought the Olympic Village was the sacred nest for all athletes preparing not only for their own personal honor but also for the national prestige of their countries in a sublime spirit of the Olympic ideals.
It surprised me to know that the Organizing Committee of the 1994 Lillehammer Games officially distributed Condoms to the athletes and officials staying in the Olympic Village through the good offices of the medical clinic in the Village
In my criteria as an exemplary and ordinary person from Korea who grew up under the strict influence of Confucianism, it was nothing but a shocking.
Korea was known as “Best-mannered and a most courteous nation in the Orient” from time immemorial.
In the ancient Korea, “Boys and girls, aged from 7 and above, are strictly prohibited even to be seated together.”
Not to mention, the Korean athletes who used to stay and train separately at their national training center of Taeneung in Seoul at that time in preparation for the Olympics for which their honors and their future were at stake.
Of course, there were, once in a blue moon, some rumors and talks about some romance between and among male and female athletes while staying in the same complex (but at completely separate living quarters).
However, as far as the Olympics are concerned, they all had to behave themselves only concentrating on best performance in competitions of the Games.
As for me, as Acting Chef-de-Mission in charge of international relations, I had to check and verify every small detail related to welfare and daily routine of athletes in the Olympic Village.
Therefore, I paid a visit to the medical clinic in the Olympic Village to carry out my fact-finding mission about “Condoms” distribution. I asked to a female volunteer whether the “Condoms” existed in the Olympic Village out of curiosity.
This lady asked me back with smiles about how many I needed, while actually showing to me those real “Condoms”.
This was what the culture shock was all about. This was when I met the Olympic condoms for the first time in my life. Those Olympic condoms were nicely and cutely gift-wrapped.
The Olympic condoms were placed on the palm of my ÒsacredÓ hand. That was hell of awkward and clumsy moments when condoms declared their “Co-habitation” with the Olympics.
This was when Condoms met the Olympics.
I received 3 Olympic condoms as 3 was the daily maximum allowance per person. As I was not in a position to publicize it to the Korean Olympic Delegation, I just kept them and brought them back home as Olympic souvenir.
This historic Olympic condom is still well exhibited in my private PyeongSan Sport Museum.
Even though I used to speak a lot about the Olympic issues no matter what kinds of subject, I have never spoken even a word about the Olympic condom.
You know why?
Because I did not wish to impose on the Korean athletes who might be triggered to use them as soon as they knew it.
The tradition of Olympic condom distribution for anti-AIDS purpose continued in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics as one way of the Olympic Games Knowledge Transfer Program.
In the 2000 Sydney Olympics, it was reportedly known that 100,000 condoms provided by “Ansell” company were out of stock in a couple of days.
As a result, additional 400,000 Olympic condoms also had to be supplied.
As the total number of Olympic participants was about 15,000 including 10,500 athletes in the Olympic village, it was estimated that average 33 condoms per person were consumed.
As this was merely an unofficial, statistical figure, we do not have to keep it in mind.
Nevertheless, it must have been tremendously a large number of condoms.
It must have been due to a perfect sense of timing when the Olympic sex culture met the anti-AIDS policy.
What if Baron Pierre de Coubertin heard this news?
In 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, I tried to find out the consequences of Olympic condoms. However, I heard the unexpected feed-back: No Olympic condoms were distributed.
At that moment, I was so curious that I had to know why not.
When I asked about it to many Olympic Family members, most of them were not aware of the existence of Olympic condoms. Nor were the Olympic journalists.
But at long last, I was able to solve the mystery about why there were no condoms distributed in the Torino Games, thanks to one very knowledgeable and distinguished IOC family member who still needs to remain anonymous. The reason why not was simple, clear and brief: “Italy is a Catholic nation.”
What will be the consequences of Olympic condoms in the future Games (after Beijing2008, Vancouver 2010, London 2012, and beyond)?
This is what I wish to know about.
