6월10일 동계올림픽유치찬반 주민투표결과 발표에 따른Sion2026이 유치경쟁에서 철회 후(after Sion 2026 withdrew from the race following a referendum defeat yesterday) 스위스 Sion이 속한 발레 주(the Canton of Valais)정치인들이 다시는 이 지역에서 올림픽유치를 하는 일이 없을 지도 모른다는(the region may never bid again.) 경고와 함께 (IOC측의)탄원이 나온 것(the plea came)이라고 합니다
Canton주 전반에 걸쳐 유권자들이 행한 주민투표결과 US$ 1.01억 불(CHF 1억 스위스 프랑/약 1,100억원)의 기금재원방출을 거부한 후(after voters in a Canton-wide referendum rejected releasing funding of CHF100 million (£76 million/$101 million/€87 million) 이제 Sion2026동계올림픽 및 패럴림픽 유치는 붕괴되어(collapsed) 물 건너 간 것으로 보도되고 있습니다.
Valais주 전역에 걸쳐 거주하고 있는 시민들을 제안된 자금사용 패키지(on the proposed funding package)에 ‘반대’ 투표를 하였는데 이는 그들의 세금의 일부가 인프라와 안전비용지불에 사용될 것임9 some of their tax money used to pay for infrastructure and security)을 인지하게 될 것임을 알기 때문이라고 합니다

따라서 Sion은 동계올림픽 및 패럴림픽 유치관련 주민투표가 부결된 가장 최근의 유럽도시가 되었으며 2013년에 2022년 동계올림픽 및 패럴림픽 유치찬반여부 주민투표에서 결국 무너져버린 노르웨이 Oslo 주민들의 유치불허 전철이 이어져 오고 있는 것(no bid has been given the green light in a public vote since Oslo in 2013 - an attempt which eventually collapsed anyway0이라고 합니다
Sion2026주민투표 불허방침발표 후 성명서를 통하여 IOC는 부결사태와 관련 “올림픽대회 개최경비에 대한 시대에 뒤 떨어진 정보” 때문이라고 비난하였다(the IOC blamed the loss on "outdated information on the cost of the Games")고 합니다
다음은 Sir Craig Reedie영국 IOC위원 겸 WADA회장의 코멘트입니다:

1980년대 올림픽운동 미래를 대비한 상업적 기반을 구축해 놓은 것으로 평가 받고 있는 도사 급 스포츠 마케팅전문가(a sports marketing guru credited with laying the commercial foundations of the future of the Olympic Movement in the 1980s)인 Patrick Nally는 올림픽유치에 대한 기존관행은 이미 끝났으며(the traditional days of bidding were over) IOC는 이제 그 대신 올림픽대회개최에 적합한 맞춤도시를 선택해야 한다(the IOC should instead "select" a city tailored to host the Games)고 주장하였다고 합니다.

국제 패럴림픽 위원회(IPC: International Paralympic Committee) 역시 성명서를 통하여 다음과 같이 추가적으로 반응하였다고 합니다:
A. "The IPC is disappointed at the referendum result which has resulted in the Sion 2026 Executive Committee returning its mandate to organise the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. (IPC는 Sion2026 집행위원회가 결국 동계올림픽 및 패럴림픽 조직의무를 반환해야 하는 지경에 이르렀다는 사실에 실망함)
B. "By voting against the releasing of funds, the citizens have denied Switzerland the opportunity to stage a spectacular sporting event that would have showcased the best of the country to a global audience and an event that would ultimately have transformed attitudes towards impairment and further driven social inclusion. 이전에는 오스트리아의 Innsbruck가 지난 2017년 10월 그러한 주민투표결과로 2026년 동계대회유치 좌절의 고통을 겪었던 가장 최근의 유치희망도시(the latest city to suffer such a defeat in October, killing their bid for 2026)였습니다
스위스 글라우뷘덴 주(the Canton of Graubünden) 거주자들의 총 60%에 해당하는 유권자들 역시 이전 라이벌 유치도시였던 Davos2026 유치도 무산(also voted against a former rival Swiss 2026 bid) 시킨 바 있다고 합니다.
2022년 동계올림픽 및 패럴림픽 유치지향 스위스 글라우뷘덴 주(the Canton of Graubünden) Davos2022 주민투표도 유사하게 실패하였는바 이는 폴란드의 Krakow및 독일 뮌헨도 같은 운명이었다고 합니다
캐나다 Calgary 역시 금년 후반 또는 2019년 초반 중에 주민투표를 직면할 가능성이 농후한 편이며 스웨덴의 스톡홀름(Stockholm)과 이태리의 밀라노(Milan), 토리노(Turin) 및 Cortina d”Ampezzo유치 역시 정치적 지지를 보장 받고 있지 못하다고 합니다.
이런 상황에서 이미 좌절의 아픔을 격은 바 있는 Innsbruck가 소재한 국가인 오스트리아의 Graz와 함께 완전 문외한으로 간주되고 있는(currently considered a rank outsider) 터키의 Erzurum 및 일본의 Sapporp 등3개 도시가 정도가 남아 있는 상태인데 삿포로의 경우 제반 정황상 2026년 대회 대신에 2030년 동계올림픽유치를 더 선호하고 있는 상태라고 합니다.
IOC는 오는 2019년 9월 개최도시 선정 전인 금년10월 부에노스아이레스 개최 IOC총회에서 2026년 공식후보도시들을 승인하기로 되어 있다(due to approve official candidates)고 합니다.
