7월12일 미국올림픽위원회(USOC: United States Olympic Committee)가 Sarah Hirshland를 USOC의 새로운 CEO로 발표하였다고 합니다.

Hirshland 는 현재 미국골프협회(USGA: United States Golf Association) 수석상무관(Chief Commercial Officer)으로 재직하고 있으며 USOC새로운 역할은 오는 8월말에 착수에 들어가기로 되어 있다(set to take up her new role at the end of August)고 합니다

 

 

Hirshland지명결정으로 8년 간 봉직한 후 지난 2월 사임한 USOC 사무총장(CEO) Scott Blackmun 후임 자리 찾기 숙제가 끝난 것(brings an end to USOC's search for a replacement for Scott Blackmun)을 의미합니다

 

 

Blackmun은 미국스포츠 계와 미국전체를 들쑤셔 놓았던 Larry Nasser의 성폭력 스캔들 여파로(in the wake of sexual abuse scandal) 비판을 받고 있었던 와중에 2018년 1월 USOC시무처직원들에게 자신이 전립선 암으로 투병중임(battling prostate cancer)을 알린 바 있다고 합니다.

따라서 Susanne Lyons가 최근 몇 개월 간 CEO직무대행역할을 수행해 왔으며 그녀는 선수안전과 참여방안 증대목표(aimed at enhancing athlete safety and engagement)지향 몇 가지 조치를 발표하기도 하면서 조직을 이끌어 왔다고 합니다.

 

 

Larry Probst USOC위원장(Chairman)은 새로 영입한 Hirshland가 USOC조직을 환골탈태하도록 도움이 되는 그녀 나름의 독특하고 검증된 재능과 경륜의 소유자(a unique and proven set of skills and experiences which would help to transform the organization)라고 다음과 같이 발언 하였다고 합니다:

 

 

A.  "The USOC is at a critical time in its history and requires an energetic, creative and inspiring leader who is capable of building on past success while making sure that the athletes we serve are protected, supported and empowered in every possible way." (USOC는 역사상 위기에 처해 있으며 따라서 과거의 성공을 디딤돌로 삼아 활용할 수 있는 능력을 가진 활기 넘치고 창의적이며 영감을 불어 넣어줄 리더를 필요로 하고 있으며 동시에 가능한 모든 방법을 통하여 우리가 섬기고 있는 선수들이 보호 받고, 지원체계가 구비되고 자율경영 할 수 있도록 확고히 해 줄 수 있어야 함)

 

B.  "I'm thrilled that Sarah has accepted the position and thankful to the diverse slate of candidates who participated in our process to hire the very best person for this important responsibility. (본인은 Sarah가 직책을 수락한 데 대해 가슴 벅차며, 이렇게 중차대한 책무를 감당한 최적의 인물을 임용하는 과정에 참여해 중 다양한 경력의 후보자들에 대하여 감사하는 바임)

 

C.  "I'd also like to acknowledge Susanne Lyons for her superb leadership of the USOC for the last several months, while ensuring that America's athletes continue to receive the support they need during our period of transition." Hirshland는 그녀의 현재 직책수행이 USGA글로벌 미디어와 콘텐츠 배포, 기업 파트너십, 상품 및 라이센싱, 마케팅, 소통, 공동체 봉사활동 및 골프 핸디캡 정보 망 관리 책임(responsible for the USGA's global media and content distribution, corporate partnerships, merchandise and licensing, marketing, communications, community outreach and golfer handicap information network)을 포함하고 있다고 합니다.

 

 

USOC는 Hirshland 신임 CEO에게 “중앙집중적 마케팅 기능” 재정비 권리를 부여하였으며 연합 골프 협회들과의 관계설정 변화와 서비스제공 권리도 함께 재 정립하도록 전권을 부여하였다(establishing a "centralised marketing function" and with transforming relationships and service offerings with the Allied Golf Associations)고 합니다

 

 

그녀는 미디어 권리 교섭감독, 글로벌 기업 파트너십 확보와 관리 및 토너먼트 운영서비스 변형 지도 역할(overseen media rights negotiations, secured and managed global corporate partnerships and guided the transformation of tournament management services)도 해 온 것으로 알려졌습니다.

Hirshland는 USOC조직이 도전과제들에 직면하고 있음을 인정하였으며, 향후 선수들이 보호받는 구조를 확고히 하겠다고(admitted the organisation faces challenges and said she would look to ensure athletes are protected ) 다음과 같이 언급하였다고 합니다:

 

A.  "I recognise the challenges ahead as we navigate this critical moment in the USOC's history." (USOC역사상 위기의 순간을 항해하고 있는 가운데 나는 닥칠 도전과제들이 있음을 인정하는 바임)

 

B.  "We must protect, support and empower athletes, young and old, elite and beginner.(우리는 선수들이 남녀노소, 엘리트나 초보자 간에 선수들에 대한 보호, 지원 및 힘 실어주기에 매진해야 함)

 

C.  "Olympic and Paralympic sport in the United States must be a shining example, able to provide athletes with the benefits of participation in an environment free from abuse of any kind. (미국에서 올림픽 및 패럴림픽 스포츠가 빛나는 모범사례가 되어야 하며 선수들에게 어떤 종류를 막론하고 폭행이 발을 못 붙이는 환경에서 참가로 인한 혜택이 선수들에게 돌아가도록 힘써야 함)

 

D.  "The USOC has made great strides in this area and I look forward to carrying on that critically important work." (USOC는 이러한 영역에서 위대한 진전을 이룩해 왔으며, 나는 그렇게 심히 중요한 업무를 수행할 것을 학수고대하고 있음)

 

 

 

USOC 사무총장직무대행이었던 Lyons체제하에서 USOC는 Wendy Guthrie를 선수보호 선임국장(their senior director of athlete safety)으로 발표한 바 있으며, 미국 안전스포츠 센터 기금을 두 배로 증액한(doubled the funding of the US Center for SafeSport) 바 있다고 합니다.

 

 

그들은 또한 Lisa Borders를 선수 및 가맹경기단체 참여위원회 위원장으로 지명한 바(chair of an Athlete and National Governing Body Engagement Commission) 있다고 합니다.

 

 

보다 증액된 기금과 재원(further funding and resources)이 성폭행으로 영향을 받은 선수들에게 주기로 되어 있으며(set to be given to athletes impacted by sexual abuse), 동시에 USOC는 안전대책보장추가조치로 안전정책과 절차에 대한 전반적 검토실행(are reviewing their safety policies and procedures to add further safeguards)에 들어가고 있다고 첨언하였다고 합니다

 

 

Lyons 전임 USOC사무총장 직무대행은 여러 건의 폭행 스캔들에 대한 반응으로 소집된 의회청문회에 USOC를 대표하여 참석한 바(has represented USOC in a Congressional hearing held in response to various abuse scandals) 있다고 합니다

 

 

이전 USA체조 팀 닥터였던 Larry Nassar는 금년 초 300명 이상의 고소인들이 고소한 후175년 징역에 처해 진 바(jailed for up to 175 years after more than 300 people accused him of abuse earlier this year) 있다고 합니다

 

 

Hirshland는 2011년에 USGA에 합류한 바 있는데 그전에는 현재 Wasserman으로 알려진 Wasserman Media Group에서 전략사업개발 담당 수석부회장(the senior vice president for strategic business development)으로 근무하였다고 합니다

 

 

Wasserman그룹회장 겸 CEO는 Casey Wasserman인데 그는 현재 LA2028 올림픽 및 패럴림픽 조직위원회 위원장이기도 합니다.

 

 

Hirshland는 Wasserman그룹 컨설팅 부서에서 근무하면서 American Express, Nationwide, Nokia, Scotts 및 Wachovia와 같은 클라이언트를 위한 스포츠마케팅전략개발을 주도하였다(leading the development of sports marketing strategies)고 합니다.

 

 

Hirshland는 또한 OnSport라는 스포츠 및 엔터테인먼트 회사와 스포츠뉴스 및 테크놀로지 회사인 Total Sports에서 핵심 중역직책들(key executive positions)도 맡아 온 바 있다고 합니다.

A.  "I know first hand that Sarah is a visionary leader and exactly the right person to lead the USOC as we collectively build to the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games." (우리가 집합적으로 LA2028올림픽 및 패럴림픽을 함께 꾸려나가야 하기 때문에 본인은 Sarah가 환상적인 리더이며 USOC를 선도해 갈 정확하게 적임자라고 직접적으로 알고 있음)

Hirshland는 직책수행을 위하여 그녀 가족과 함께 USOC본부가 소재한 Colorado Springs로 이전하기로 되어 있다(set to relocate to Colorado Springs with her family to take up the position)고 합니다.

 

 

USOC신임 CEO임용을 위하여 전국적인 검색(the nationwide search)이 이루어졌는데 이 업무는 중역 탐색 및 리더십 컨설팅 회사(an executive search and leadership consulting firm)인 Spencer Stuart가 실행하였다고 합니다.

 

 

우리나라의 경우 대한체육회를 비롯하여 대부분의 체육단체들이 사무총장 등 중역 직책을 임명할 때 inner circle 및 개인적 친분과 선호도에 의해 국내외적 검증절차 없이 개별 선발하는 것이 관행으로 되어  온 것이 작금의 현실인 것 같습니다.

 

 

세계 스포츠를 선도하는 미국 등 유럽 선진국들과 같이 인재등용 시 능력과 경력 그리고 국제경쟁력을 갖춘 인재들이 객관적 보편타당성 있는 인재발굴전문회사를 통하여 발굴한 후 절차를 거쳐 선임하는 인재등용선진화를 Bench-Marking하는 날이 하루바삐 정착하기를 소망해 봅니다.
