14쪽으로 된 Pierre de Coubertin남작(근대올림픽부활주창자)연설문원고가 US$880만불(약105억원)에 지난 2019년 12월19일 경매에서 미지의 구매자(mystery buyer)에게 팔렸는데, 이 경매낙찰 액수는 스포츠기념품(sports memorabilia)한 품목에 대해 실현된 사상 최고가(the largest price ever)라고 한다.

이 구매자의 신분은 2020년 2월10일(월)공개되었는데(unmasked)그는 다름아닌 러시아 억만장자로 익히 알려졌으며 국제펜싱연맹(FIE: International Fencing Federation)회장인 우즈벡 태생 러시아 억만장자(Uzbek-born Russian billionaire/1953년생 만 66세)인데 그는 흔쾌히 그 귀한 원고를 스위스 Lausanne고재 올림픽박물관에 선물로 기증(presented it as a gift)하였으며 다음과 같이 기증소견을 밝혔다:

 

 

“이 원고는 근대올림픽에 대한 선언서임-쿠베르탱은 대결과 전쟁으로 분열된 세계를 지양하고 체육운동추구로 하나된 세계구축이라는 비전을 가지고 있었음-본인은 올림픽박물관이야말로 이렇게 가치를 논할 수 없을 정도로 소중한 원고를 소장하는데 가장 적합한 장소라고 믿고 있음” (This manuscript is the manifesto for the modern Olympic Games. Pierre de Coubertin had a vision of a world united by athletic pursuits and not divided by confrontations and wars. I believe that The Olympic Museum is the most appropriate place to keep this priceless manuscript.)

 

 

거의 130년 전에 쓰여진 동 원고의 몇 쪽은 올림픽박물관에 곧 전시될 것이며 전체문건 역시 궁극적으로 일반에 공개 될 것이라고 한다.

 

 

 

 

 

14쪽짜리 원고(14-page manuscript)에는 근대세계에서 올림픽대회를 부활시키려는 그의 이상적인 발상(his visionary idea)를 발표한 연설문 내용이 담겨있다. 동 연설문은 1892년 11월25일 ‘the Union des Sociétés Françaises de Sports Athlétiques’(French Union of Athletic Sports Societies)창립 5주년 축하행사에서 읽혀졌으며 그 당시 쿠베르탱은 29세였다. 2년 후 1894년 같은 장소 강당(the same auditorium)에서 올림픽대회 재 설립결정이 공인(the decision to re-establish the Olympic Games was formalised )되었다.

 

 

다음은 Thomas Bach IOC위원장의 소감내용이다:

 

A.  “Today we are witnessing history. At one level, we are witness to this historic document, the manuscript of the speech that laid out the philosophical foundations of the Olympic Movement. On another level, we are witnessing a historic moment, with this manuscript returning to its Olympic home, the place where it belongs.” (오늘날 우리는 역사를 목격하고 있음-한 수준에서 보면, 우리는 올림픽운동의 철학적 기초가 놓여진 연설문의 원고인 이러한 역사적 문건에 대한 증인임- 또 다른 수준에서 보면 원소속인 올림픽본산으로 귀환한 이 원고지와 함께 우리는 역사적 순간을 목도하고 있음)

 

 

B.  “This donation today goes well beyond the handing over of a manuscript to The Olympic Museum. Your generosity is making this unique moment possible, a moment that reminds us so vividly of the mission of the Olympic Games to unite the world in peaceful competition. It is thanks to your generosity that we can reflect on our history today and celebrate this direct link to our founding father.” (오늘 이러한 기증행위는 올림픽박물관으로 원고지가 인수 사실을 넘어선 소중한 것임-Usmanov의 아낌 없는 관대한 마음으로 인해 올림픽이 평화로운 경기로써 세계를 연합시키고자 하는 사명에 대해 그렇게 생생하게 상기시켜주는 지금 이 특별한 순간이 가능해 지고 있음-우리가 오늘날 우리의 역사를 되돌아볼 수 있고 올림픽창설자 아버지와의 이러한 직접적인 연대감을 기념할 수 있도록 해준 Usmanov당신의 관대함 덕분임)

 

 

 

불어 판 원고는 파리 세계박람회(the Paris World Fair)기간 동안 쿠베르탱 남작에 의해 공동 조직된1889년 개최 국제 체육교육총회(the 1889 International Congress on Physical Education)용 여백 등록 양식 뒷면에sepia 잉크로 우아하게 우브 종이(wove paper)이 된 14개 잎사귀 위(on the 14 leaves of wove paper on the back of blank registration forms)에 쓰여졌다. 흥미를 자아내는 수정된 문구가 보여지는(showing intriguing revisions)선언서 원본 쪽은 일반대중에게 처음으로 선 보이면서 향후 올림픽박물관에 계속 전시될 것이다. 전체 문건(the full document)은 차후 궁극적으로 영구 전시(eventually be put on permanent display)에 들어 갈 것이다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

소중한 쿠베르탱 선언서 원고 기증자인 Alisher Usmanov(1953년 9월9일생)의 재산은 Forbes경제지가 2019년 보도한 바에 따르면 US$130억불(약15.6조원)으로 추정(estimated net worth of US$13.0 billion)된다.

 

 

그는 구소련 우즈벡 공화국 펜싱 사브레(sabre)선수출신으로 펜싱중흥을 위해 2004년 창설된 자신의 자선기금단체charity fund)인 “펜싱의 미래를 위하여”(For the Future of Fencing)를 통해 투자하였다. 그는 러시아펜싱연맹회장(2001~2009)과 유럽펜싱총연맹(European Fencing Confederation)회장(2005~2009)를 역임하였으며 2008년 Paris Congress 투표대결에서 66:61로 당시 집권회장이었던 René Roch를 누르고 국제펜싱연맹(FIE)회장으로 선출되었고 2012년 Moscow Congress에서 127표로 재선 그리고 2016년 다시 3선 회장으로 선출되었다.
