From Seoul1988 to PyeongChang2018: Korea’s Olympic Journey Toward Peace and Cultural Unity”란 제목으로 스피치를 하였습니다.

(Update) Speech for International Conference Milan 10 October

[Speech Title]

“From Seoul1988 to PyeongChang2018: Korea’s Olympic Journey Toward Peace and Cultural Unity”

October 10, 2025 – Testori Auditorium, Milan

Presented by Prof. Rocky Kang Ro Yoon, IOC Member of Culture and Olympic Heritage and FICTS Ambassador

Buon Jiorno,

FICTS President Prof. Franco Ascani, Distinguished guests, Esteemed colleagues, and friends of the Olympic Movement,

It is a profound honor to stand before you today in Milan, a city of culture, vision, legacy and sacred religion characterized by Duomo Catheral as we gather to reaffirm the timeless ideals of sport, peace, and Olympic Truce. Truce is our true story-telling of what the sport and the Olympic Movement are all about.

I have come to you from Korea, a nation whose Olympic journey has been deeply intertwined with the pursuit of reconciliation, resilience, and cultural renaissance. Our story is not merely one of medals and milestones—it is a testament to how sport can heal divisions and inspire Unity in Diversity, and Unity in Dignity.

Let me begin with Seoul 1988, a defining moment not only for Korea but for the entire Olympic Movement itself. We celebrated the 37th anniversary of its successful hosting as recently as 17 September at Seoul Olympic Park, another legacy of Seoul Olympics. Emerging from decades of Korean war and division, Korea hosted the Games with a singular purpose: to reintroduce itself to the world as a peaceful, democratic, and forward-looking nation. The Seoul Olympics marked the return of the Games to Asia after 24 years and welcomed a record number of 160 participating nations, including those from both sides of the Cold War divide. It was a triumph of diplomacy through sport—a living embodiment of the Olympic Truce and Olympic ideals and Olympic values.

Fast forward thirty years to PyeongChang 2018, where the Winter Games became a stage for one of the most powerful gestures of peace in recent history. Athletes from North and South Korea marched together under a unified Korean Peninsular flag. An inter-Korean joint women’s ice hockey team was formed. And for a brief, shining moment, the frozen tensions of geopolitics melted in the warmth of Olympic spirit. PyeongChang reminded the world that even the most entrenched divides can be bridged—if we dare to dream together.

But Korea’s contribution to global harmony does not end with sport. Today, K-Culture—from K-pop, K-drama, and K-beauty to Korean cinema((Parasite/기생충) and K-Food, cuisine, as epitomized as 케데헌(K-Pop/Demon/Hunters and “Squid Game”, BTS singers group which is a Korean version of Beatles, and “강남 스타일” —has become a universal language of human connection. It transcends borders, generations, and ideologies. It is no coincidence that the values embedded in Korean culture—resilience, creativity, inclusivity, and community—mirror those of shining Olympism originated from Seoul 1988 and PyeongChang 2018 as well.

In fact, the fusion of K-Culture and Olympic culture and Olympic values offers a compelling model for the future: where sport is not only a competition, but a celebration of identity; where cultural expression amplifies the message of peace; and where young people around the world find inspiration not just in athletic excellence, but in shared story-telling and Olympic dreams. “Give Peace a Chance” “Give Culture a Chance”, “Give Olympic Truce a Chance” and “Give Dream a Chance”

“Peace is a global Game Changer for war-stricken modern world”

“Olympics must be younger, more Digital and Modern through Milan Cortina 2026 OWG”

As we look ahead to Milano Cortina 2026, I believe we have a unique opportunity to build on this Olympic legacy of global peace and Olympic truce.

Let us embrace the power of cultural Olympiads, digital storytelling, and youth engagement.

Let us ensure that the Olympic Truce is not just a tradition or ceremony—but a living, breathing commitment to dialogue and dignity, grace and governance. “Together, we can communicate, coordinate, control and command through Olympic community”

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for peace and culture.

IOC President Emeritus Thomas Bach devised, designed and defined his brain child called the Olympic Agenda 2020+5.

“On a big picture level, what an amazing human-being he is while bringing together Unity in Diversity through the Olympics in a value-chaotic era”

In this contextual picture, he is a great leader, visionary, innovator, with brilliant intuition with his amazing, awesome, admirable adorable, leadership, and charismatic governance capabilities, thereby being referred to as Hero of heroes in the 21st century Olympic Movement. For his enormous achievements, I wrote a book about hum, titled: “Thomas Bach: The Olympic Reformer”

In closing, I offer Korea’s experience as a humble testimony: that even a divided nation can rise through sport and Olympics; that peace is not a distant ideal, but a daily practice; and that culture, when paired with courage, can move the world.

Aristotle once said, “You are what you repeated do, Excellence, then is not an act but a habit.”

Milan Cortina will be the most iconic and impeccable place for showcasing the enjoyments of sports and culture to the whole world next year. “Passion lives here.” “It is your vibes.”

“We can change the soul of the Games through Peace.”

“We can’t change where we came from, but we can change where we will go” “Change or be changed”

“Sustainability is the reminiscence of the past.

Sustainability is the introspect of the present,

Sustainability is the hope for the future”

“We can go faster, we can aim higher, and we can become much stronger, together.”

From the Book of Matthew of the Bible 7:7,

“Ask, and it will be given,

Seek, and you will find,

Knock, and it will be opened to you.

Thank you, and may the flame of peace continue to burn brightly in Milan Cortina and beyond. Grazie mille!!!
