For those new to the joys of the Olympics, or those who only tune in once every four years, the Q-Series, previously known as the Olympic Qualifier Series, is a massive multi-sport event, carefully curated to the rhythm of music and featuring touches of art and culture, organised by the International Olympic Committee as the final qualifying stage for the grand spectacle that are the Games. Four globally recognised cities will host the blockbuster in an expanded system on the road to Los Angeles 2028, as the International Olympic Committee, through its president Kirsty Coventry, disclosed on Thursday. Hence, Tokyo (Japan), Shanghai (China), Montreal (Canada) and Orlando (United States) will each stage one stop of the series in 2028.
The full sporting programme for each stop will be announced later, according to the Zimbabwean leader's official statement. Even so, the 42-year-old former Olympic champion hinted at the menu: 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, BMX freestyle, sport climbing, flag football and skateboarding. "We're really excited because these four cities do these things extremely well, so it will be an exciting build-up on the road to LA 2028," Coventry claimed, reflecting on how decisive qualification can be, and on the way this series offers athletes a sharply defined chance to secure direct places for LA.
The route to California will unfold as two consecutive blocks: first Asia in May, then North America in June. It begins in Tokyo, the city where 3x3 basketball, BMX freestyle, sport climbing and skateboarding made their Olympic debuts at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Just a week later, the circuit moves on to Shanghai, the city where the Q-Series first took shape in 2024.
In June, the series crosses the Pacific to Montreal, returning to the iconic 1976 Olympic Park, reopening its doors, symbolically and practically, to a new generation. The journey then concludes in Orlando, guiding everyone with skin in the game, performers and passionate onlookers, into the final visible stretch of the road to the real show in LA from 14-30 July.
From Lausanne, the IOC has already given the green light to almost all qualification systems for the next Olympics. Only athletics, cricket and football remain to be finalised, and those are expected to be presented at the June Session.
For most sports, the ranking and points window opens this May 2026 and will close three months before the Olympic flame is lit in California.
The 'New Flag' rule has also been reinforced recently, particularly in sports such as triathlon. For the first time, it guarantees two fixed places per continent for nations that fail to qualify through the usual pathways, under the overarching objective of securing for athletes from less developed countries a meaningful and competitive place in the arena.
