Kim resigns over controversial remarks

The Korean Sport & Olympic Committee secretary general announced on Monday that she will be stepping down from her post following the backlash over her comments about a young boxer who has been left comatose after a bout.

"I deeply apologise for causing concern to the public and sports community regarding this matter," Kim Na-mi said in a statement released through the governing body. "I feel a heavy sense of responsibility as a public official and will step down from my position."

Kim, a former alpine skier, ignited a controversy last week after an interview about 'Student A', a minor who made their debut in the 57kg weight class in a boxing competition in September of last year. The boxer reportedly sustained multiple heavy blows to the head and collapsed shortly after the start of the second round. 'Student A' remains in a coma despite having undergone brain surgery soon after the incident.

The secretary general had told the media outlet last week that "the child had no chance from the beginning. He is already brain dead. Now, the probability of him waking up is…" and added, "We really don't want to compare it to that, but someone died in an accident at a marathon, and their family donated their organs."

The public outcry over Kim's remarks soon grew, and the KSOC held an emergency meeting to take action. KSOC President Ryu Seung-min, who was abroad attending the Sanya Asian Beach Games at the time, decided to cut short his schedule to deal with the issue. The governing body initiated disciplinary actions, and Kim was suspended last Friday.

"We express deep regret regarding the content of the secretary general's interview recently reported by the media, and we sincerely apologise to the athlete and family who have been deeply hurt by this incident, as well as to the public who felt disappointed. The inappropriate remarks made during the secretary-general's interview cannot be justified for any reason. We gravely recognise this as a very serious matter that betrayed our responsibility as a public institution tasked with prioritising the protection of athletes' lives and safety," KSOC said in a statement.

Now it seems that the organisation will take permanent action, distancing itself from Kim, at a time when the governing body is recovering from public distrust due to the previous administration's actions, which included embezzlement and illegal hiring practices. Kim, who was appointed as the first female secretary general of the committee in March of last year, has had a distinguished career in sports administration. She was vice president of the International Biathlon Union and secretary general of the Sports Talent Development Foundation, indicating a notable career arc. Now, like several other former members of KSOC, she'll step down at the height of her career in disgrace.
