Sunshine Coast, Queensland host Brisbane 32' supplier event

More than 500 business representatives gained insights into how they could access procurement and supply chain opportunities linked to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, during a briefing held on Tuesday.

Leaders said the 'time is now' for local businesses to engage with Brisbane 2032 opportunities, with around $2.5 billion (€2.3bn) in contracts expected to be made available across the state. The procurement program is set to open significant pathways for small and medium-sized businesses to secure work linked to the delivery of the Games.

Organised by Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with the Queensland government, the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Procurement Opportunities event provided businesses with practical guidance on how to supply goods and services ahead of and during the Games.

Attendees heard directly from representatives involved in delivering the Games and key infrastructure projects, including the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, the Queensland government, Sunshine Coast Council and the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games were expected to generate opportunities across a broad range of sectors, including construction, transport, events, hospitality, technology, health services, marketing, cleaning and waste management, among others.

Highlighting the importance of the event as a key milestone on the road to the Games and the benefits it could unlock, Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said, "For our region, this is about turning a global event into real local opportunities including jobs, contracts and long-term tourism benefits. Our local businesses are the backbone of the Sunshine Coast economy and connecting them early to Games procurement opportunities is a key priority for council.

"We wanted Sunshine Coast businesses to understand what was coming, what was required, and how they could confidently step into Games related work. Most importantly, we were determined to make sure Sunshine Coast businesses and our community were the real beneficiaries of our role as a Co Host City for the world’s greatest sporting event."

The event also showcased major Games-related infrastructure projects across the Sunshine Coast, including the Sunshine Coast Stadium upgrade, the Sunshine Coast Mountain Bike Centre, the Sunshine Coast Arena and Athlete Village, and The Wave rail project.

Queensland Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Jarrod Bleijie said the delivery of the 2032 infrastructure programme would support local industry and create jobs, stating, "Queensland needed to host a world-class 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and we were doing it in a way that supported local jobs and local businesses.

"From the Sunshine Coast Stadium upgrade to the new athlete village, arena and transport connections, these projects meant more work for our tradies, contractors, suppliers and service providers right across the region. We wanted Queensland small and medium businesses to be ready to bid, win and deliver, because every contract awarded locally helped create jobs and built capability that would last well beyond 2032."

Queensland Minister for Sport and Racing and Minister for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tim Mander added that the Games would deliver a lasting legacy for the region, saying, "We wanted this to be a Games for Queenslanders, delivered by Queenslanders. It was important that our local businesses shared in the benefits of the Games by helping to deliver this once-in-a-generation event.

At the event, business representatives learned about upcoming procurement opportunities, timelines for their release, and the process for becoming a registered supplier. Participants also gained an understanding of how major Sunshine Coast projects, including The Wave, would be delivered and where local businesses could contribute.

Presentations and panel discussions outlined practical steps for businesses to prepare, including the scale of the 2032 procurement programme and lessons from previous Olympic and Paralympic Games, the roles of different delivery partners and their procurement responsibilities, the capabilities and standards expected of suppliers such as experience, capacity and sustainable practices, and how to register and express interest in becoming a Brisbane 2032 supplier.
