사상최고, 최대, 최상의 동계패럴림픽으로 칭송받고 있는 평창2018 동계패럴림픽 대회가 3월18일 부로 대 단원의 막을 내렸습니다.

 

 

 

 

대한민국 국민들과 강원도민, 평창, 강릉, 정선 개최도시가 합심하여 이룩한 결과라고 생각합니다.

 

자원봉사자들의 역할은 세계 자원봉사자 수준을 끌어 올린 것 같습니다.

 

 

평창2018 조직위원회 이희범 조직위원장 이하 임직원 모두가 불철주야 애쓴 덕분이기도 합니다.

 

이러한 대 단원의 막을 내리면서 이희범 조직위원장의 한글 폐회사와 함께 영문 번역 본도 함께 소개해 드립니다.

대한민국 국민여러분!

내외 귀빈과 각국 선수단 여러분!

 

열흘 전 성화와 함께 시작한 지구촌

최대의 겨울 패럴림픽 축제가 이제

대단원의 막을 내릴 시간이 되었습니다.

 

이번 대회에서 선수들이 보여준 열정과

인간승리의 드라마는 우리 모두의

가슴속에 영원히 남을 것입니다.

 

 

대학 졸업식을 앞두고 꿈 많던 한

젊은이는 교통사고로 두 다리를 잃은 뒤“왜 살려 놨느냐?”고 울부짖으며 어머니와 세상을 원망했습니다.

 

그에게 새로운 삶을 선사한 것은

가족들의 사랑과 스포츠였습니다.

신의현 선수는 대한민국에 패럴림픽 역사상 첫 금메달을 목에 걸고

‘어머니---사랑합니다’를 외쳤습니다.

 

 

해군 장교였던 미국의 다니엘 크노슨

선수는 특수부대 작전 중 두 다리를

잃게 되었으나, 달리고 싶다는 욕망과

의지로 다시 일어나 바이애슬론 선수가 되었고, 금메달을 목에 걸었습니다.

 

스티븐 호킹 박사는 ‘삶이 아무리 힘들어도 모든 사람들에겐 특별한 성취를

이뤄낼 힘이 있다’고 했습니다.

 

2018 평창패럴림픽 자원봉사자 여러분!

 

궂은 날씨와 불편한 여건 속에서도

미소와 친절로 봉사하신 여러분들은

성공 패럴림픽을 이끈 일등공신입니다.

 

특히, 미국과 독일, 프랑스, 영국 등 해외에서 참여해 주신 여러분들은

진정한 인류애의 표상이었습니다.

 

2018 평창조직위원회 임직원 여러분!

대한민국 군인과 경찰관, 소방관 여러분!

 

여러분 모두는 진정한 애국자이며 영웅들입니다. 예기치 못한 폭설도 여러분들에겐 장애물이 되지 못했습니다.

 

문재인 대통령님과 대한민국 정부,

그리고, 강원도와 평창, 강릉, 정선 등 개최도시의 헌신적인 지원이 없었더라면

성대한 축제는 불가능했을 것입니다.

 

강원도는 이제‘평화의 땅’으로 세계인들의 가슴속에 영원히 남게 될 것입니다.

 

전 세계 패럴림픽 가족 여러분!

 

인종과 종교, 국가와 성별을 넘어

우리는 함께 웃고, 함께 울며,

진정한 우정을 나누었습니다.

 

평창 패럴림픽을 통해 세계는 하나가 되었고, 남북 선수들도 하나되어

성화봉을 들었습니다.

 

 

비록 성화는 꺼지더라도 평화의 정신은 한반도를 넘어 영원히 지속될 것입니다.

 

현대 패럴림픽의 발상지에서,

30년만에 치른 평창 패럴림픽을 통해,

힘들어도 절대 포기하지 않는 불굴의 가치가 실천되고,

또 한편으로 편견과 차별없는 인간미 넘치는 세상이 되길 바랍니다.

 

짧은 기간이었지만 우리는 행복했습니다. 우리는 여러분들을 영원히 잊지 못할 것입니다.

 

장무상망(長毋相忘)이란 말이 있습니다. 평창의 추억을 영원히 간직해 주시고

다시 이곳을 찾아 주시길 기대합니다.

[POCOG President’s Paralympic Closing Ceremonies Speech (English version)]

 

President Moon Jae-In and his First Lady of the Republic of Korea, and dear Korean people,

 

IPC President Andrew Parsons and the global Paralympic Family members,

 

Distinguished Guests at home and abroad, and all participating Para athletes and NPC delegations,

 

Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

Just 10 days ago, we gathered here together to open our Winter Paralympic Games with its Heritage Flame lit on cauldron. Now the end is near, and so we face the final curtain of the greatest global Winter Paralympic Festival.

 

Touching stories of human victory drama showcased by Para athletes through these Games will be remembered forever in our hearts.

 

Just one day before the graduation from university, one promising Korean young man had his legs amputated after a car accident. Afterward he was crying out loud and blaming his mother and the world for the tragic accident.

 

 

It was the love of his sharing-and-caring family and the power of sport that made him feel alive. When he was awarded Korea’s first-ever gold medal in the history of the Paralympics, he shouted, saying “Mom, I love you!”.

 

Daniel Cnossen became a double amputee due to his accident occurred during the U.S. Navy Seal operation. But his strong will and desire to run as before made him a miracle to stand up again, and then became a biathlete who won a gold medal for Team USA here in PyeongChang.

 

Stephen Hawking once said about ‘The Meaning of Life’:

“However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at.”

 

Dear PyeongChang Paralympic Volunteers!

 

Despite such bad weather and inconvenient living conditions, you have accomplished your mission with big smiles and kindness leading to a successful Paralympics. You did it right!  And you are the Highlights in order to “Let Everyone Shine”.

 

In particular, those volunteers who came a long way from overseas including the United States, Germany, France and United Kingdom are a true symbol and manifestation of Humanity.  

 

Dear entire POCOG Family members!

Dear ROK Military and Police Personnel and Firefighters!

 

All of you are truly Patriots and Heroes.

Even an unexpected heavy snowfall was not an obstacle at all for you.  

 

Without such dedicated support from President Moon Jae-in, Korean Government, Gangwon Province and Host Cities of PyeongChang, Gangneung and Jeongseon, it would not be possible for us to realize this magnificent Festival here in Korea.

 

From right this moment onward, Gangwon Province will be remembered forever as “the Land of Peace” in the heart of the world.

 

Dear global Paralympic family members!

 

Transcending the differences of race and religion, nationality and gender, we laughed together, cried together, and shared together a true friendship and fraternity.

 

PyeongChang2018 Paralympics connected the World as One, and South and North Korean athletes also raised together the Paralympic Torch.

 

Paralympic Flame, as it may extinguish, will bring together the world forever in a spirit of Peace far beyond the Korean Peninsula.

 

PyeongChang Paralympic Games took place at IPC’s modern birthplace in 30 years. And I hope that these Games will serve the purpose as a turning point to realize its core values of Courage and Determination never to give up under any difficult circumstances whatsoever on one hand, and to make the world much more friendly and humane with no prejudice nor discrimination, on the other. 

 

Even during a short period of time, we were happy.

We will never, ever, forget you…

 

At this moment, it reminds me of a time-old idiom of “Zhang-Mu-Shang-Maang” (長毋相忘), which means “Never, ever forget each other”

 

It is my sincere hope that you will cherish forever such good memories here in PyeongChang, and come back again.
