“Bangawoyo daehanmingook (반가워요 대한민국/Greetings Korea)

Yeoreobun Jashineul Jarangseureobgae Saenggak Hasae Yo! (여러분 자신을 자랑스럽게 생각하세요! / You should be proud of yourself)

 

Tonight is a celebration; a celebration that if you dare to dream, you must do your best to fulfil it. (오늘밤은 축하의 밤입니다; 축하의 한 마당은 여러분이 감히 꿈꾸고자 한다면 반드시 그 꿈을 채워내기 위해 최선을 다해야 합니다)

 

One man who had a dream was the late Professor Stephen Hawking, a genius of a man, a pioneer and inspiration to us all. (하나의 꿈을 키웠던 한 사람이 있는데 그 사람은 바로 얼마 전 타계한 스티븐 호킹 교수인데 그는 천재이자, 선구자이며 우리 모두에게 영감을 심어준 사람이었습니다)

 

 

At the London 2012 Paralympic Opening Ceremony, Hawking noted that we are all different and that there is no such thing as a standard or run of the mill human being. (런던2012올림픽개회식에서 그는 우리 개인개인 모두가 각자 다른 것이며, 표준이라든지 천편일률적으로 동일한 인간이라는 그런 것은 없다고 주목한 바 있습니다)

 

 

He urged us all to “Looks (up) at the stars, and not at our feet”. And, over the last 10 days the stars have shone brightly here in PyeongChang. (그는 우리 모두에게 “우리 발 밑을 보지 말고 하늘에 있는 별들을 올려다 보라”고 촉구한 바 있습니다. 그리고 지난 10일간에 걸쳐 그 별들이 이곳 평창을 밝게 비추어 주었습니다)

 

 

While Hawking tested the limits of his imagination, Paralympians, you have once again pushed the boundaries of human endeavour. (호킹 박사가 자신의 상상력의 한계를 시험했다면 여러분은 다시 한번 인간경계를 밀어내어 지경을 넓혀 왔습니다)

 

 

 

Your logic defying performances have focused the world not on what holds you back, but on what motivates and pushes you forward. (성과완수에 도전하는 여러분의 생각과 논리는 세상으로 하여금 여러분을 견제하는 그 무언가가 아니라 여러분에게 동기를 부여해 주고 매진하도록 해 주는 것이 무엇인지에 집중하도록 하여 주었습니다

 

You have shown that with a strong mind and even stronger heart, you can achieve incredible feats. (강력한 마음과 더더욱 강력한 가슴을 가지면 믿을 수 없을 정도로 엄청난 위업을 달성할 수 있음을 보여 주었습니다)

 

Ultimately, you have rewritten the theory of everything and given new purpose to possibility. (궁극적으로 여러분은 모든 세상만물의 이론을 재 정립하였으며 가능성을 향한 새로운 목적의식을 부여하였습니다)

 

 

Every generation gets a chance to change the world. (모든 세대는 각각 세상을 변화시킬 기회를 갖게 됩니다)

 

Proud Paralympians this is your time to be role models and catalysts for a more inclusive society. (자랑스런 패럴림피안들이여, 지금 이순간은 여러분이 역할모델로써의 면모과시와 좀더 포용하는 사회를 정착시키기 위한 촉매제로 자리매김하는 것을 솔선수범한 여러분의 시간입니다)

 

Now I want pay tribute to those behind the success of these Games. (자 이제 이번 대회의 성공에 뒤안길에서 수고하신 분들을 치하하고자 합니다)

 

Thank you to the Games officials, National Paralympic Committees, International Federations and International Paralympic Committee team for your tireless work. (대회 임원들, 각국 패럴림픽 위원회, 국제연맹들, 국제 패럴림픽위원회 팀들의 지치지 않고 매진하여 일해주신 여러분 모두에게 감사 드립니다)

 

Thank you to national government, Gangwon Province and to the host cities for your support. (대한민국 정부와 강원도 그리고 개최도시들이 보여 준 성원과 지원에 감사 드립니다)

 

Huge credit to Olympic Broadcasting Services, Olympic Information Services, all broadcasters and all media. (올림픽방송 서비스, 올림픽정보 서비스, 모든 방송사 및 모든 미디어 관계자 여러분의 지대한 공로를 치하합니다)

 

As the storytellers of each Games, it is you that transforms our perceptions and it is you that opens the eyes of the world to what is possible in life. (이야기꾼들이 매 대회에서 언급하듯이, 우리의 인식을 바꾸어 준 것이 바로 여러분이고, 삶에서 가능한 것이 무엇인지에 대하여 세상의 눈을 뜨게 해 준 것도 바로 여러분입니다)

You rose to the challenge. In PyeongChang you did yourselves proud and your country even prouder. (여러분은 도전을 박차고 우뚝 일어섰습니다. 평창에서 여러분 자신을 자랑스럽게 만들었으며 여러분으로 인해 대한민국은 더 더욱 자랑스런 나라로 되었습니다)

With your passion connected, you delivered not just new horizons, but new records too. (여러분의 하나된 열정으로 단순히 새로운 지평을 가져다 준 것이 아니라 새로운 기록들도 가져다 준 것입니다)

 

 

With more athletes, more countries, more media, more broadcasters and more spectators than ever before, you raised the bar for Beijing. (더 많은 선수들, 더 많은 국가들, 더 많은 미디어 관계자들, 더 많은 방송관계자들, 더 많은 관객들은 예전 기록들을 훨씬 더 뛰어 넘는 것임을 보여주었습니다)

 

 

Finally the time has come for me to declare the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games closed. (드디어 제가 평창2018 동계패럴림픽 대회 폐회를 시간이 되었습니다)

 

 

 

 

I call upon Paralympic athletes all over the world to meet again in Beijing, China, in four years’ time, where once again, you will inspire and excite the world with your sporting excellence. (전 세계 패럴림픽 선수여러분과 4년 뒤 중국 베이징에서 다시 만날 것을 기약합니다. 그곳에서 여러분은 여러분의 갈고 닦은 경기력과 기량으로 세계를 감동과 흥분의 도가니로 만들어 주실 것으로 믿습니다)
