최근 국제육상경기연맹(IAAF: International Association of Athletics Federations)은 2019년 9월26일~10월6일 카타르 도하개최 IAAF 세계육상선수권대회에서 개최국 기후 특성상 예상되는 사막의 열기 대비책으로(to combat expected hot weather) 전무후무할 것으로 예상되는 자정마라톤(Midnight Marathons)시합을 계획하고 있으며 오전 경기조차 취소하고(morning sessions scrapped) 저녁 시간대에 경기를 치를 전망이라고 합니다. 

 

 

Doha2019조직위원회 관계자들 역시 사상 최초의 자정 마라톤대회가 될 것임을 확인하였다고(with organisers also confirming the event will feature the first midnight marathon) 합니다.

 

 

 

 

또한, IAAF는Tokyo2020 올림픽 신규 세부종목경기인 혼성 4×400m 계주 경기를 내년 Doha2019 IAAF세계육상선수권대회에서 처음 선보일 것이라고(the first World Championships to feature a mixed 4x400m relay after the race was added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme)확인하였다고 합니다.

 

 

 

 

 

2019년 IAAF세계육상선수권대회 기간 중 카타르 도하의 평균기온은 최고 섭씨 37도, 최저 25도가 예상됨으로(average high temperatures are 37 degrees with a low of 25) 참가선수들의 신체적 컨디션을 고려하여 IAAF는 이 같은 사상 초유의 결정을 내린 것으로 알려졌으며 저녁 시간대에 개최되는 종목별 경기 스케줄 인터벌 조절이 이루어져 1시간정도의 휴식시간(split evening sessions, including a one-hour break)이 주어질 예정이라고 합니다.

 

 

IAAF가 발표한 대회 일정에 의하면(the competition schedule reveals) 여자 육상100m 달리기는 카타르 현지시간으로 밤 11시 20분, 여자 육상400m 달리기는 밤 11시 50분에 예정되어있다고 하며 자정(midnight)에 시작될 것으로 발표된 마라톤의 경우 새벽 2시 이후에나 참가선수들이 결승선을 통과할 것으로 예상되고 있다고 합니다.

 

 

늦은 저녁과 자정 넘어 열리는 많은 종목경기들로 인하여(with many events due to be held in the late evening and beyond midnight) 조직위원회 관계자들과 IAAF는 관중 수가 저조할 위험을 감수하고 있다고(Organisers and the IAAF are risking low crowds)합니다.

2019년 IAAF세계육상선수권대회 개최권을 Doha에 부여한 결정을 비판하는 세력은 IAAF가 London2017대회의 성공에 걸 맞는 무언가 다른 것들을 시도할 것을 촉구하고 있다(urged IAAF to try different things to build on the success of London 2017고 합니다.

 

Sebastian Coe IAAF회장은 이 같은 발표를 통해 다음과 같이 언급하였다고 합니다:

 

A.   “The first 4x400m mixed relay will have its global debut ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the first midnight marathon, the evening sessions with semi-finals and finals only and dedicated slots in the timetable for the final stages of field events allowing full focus on the decisive and most thrilling moments and attempts. “(내년에 도하에서 열리는 IAAF세계육상선수권대회에서 Tokyo2020올림픽에 앞서 지구촌에 처음 열리는 혼성 4×400m 계주 경기, 최초의 자정마라톤, 오로지 준결승전 및 결승전 경기(track)와 field종목 결승에 집중된 경기만 일정상 저녁에 열리게 되는 만큼 결정적이고 가장 흥미진진한 순간들에 올인 하도록 편성하고자 하는 취지임)

 

 

B.  “We are looking forward to seeing how these firsts and the engagement format will come together next year to deliver a World Championships that will look and feel different.” (우리는 이러한 처음 시도되는 것들과 연동되는 포맷이 어떻게 어우러져 다르게 보이고 느껴지게 될 내년 세계선수권대회 개최를 통하여 보게 될 새로운 시도를 학수고대하고 있음)

육상경기들이 저녁 늦게 열리는 만큼 관중감소로 인해 경기장의 빈 좌석들이 많을 것이라는 우려가 팽배하고 있는 상황이며 인권침해/인권유린문제와 현재 카타르는 중동지역 정세로 인해 주변국들로부터 고립되어 있는 상태이고 세계육상선수권대회 유치 과정에서 의심의 꼬리가 일고 있는 부패에 대한 우려 또한 성공적인 대회성공을 위협할 수 있는 요인들로 지적 받고(Fears over low numbers of spectators have been one of the main concerns in the build-up to the event, along with human rights abuses, Qatar's current isolation in the Middle East and lingering corruption concerns over the way the event was awarded) 있다고 합니다.

 

 

이와 관련하여 영국육상연맹(UKA: UK Athletics) Ed Warner 前 회장은 London에게 패배한 Doha가 도전하였던 2017년 세계육상선수권대회 개최도시 선출 투표 전날 밤 카타르 관계자들이 IAAF의 고위관계자들에게 갈색 봉투들을 배포했다(Qatari officials were handing out brown envelopes on the eve of the vote for the 2017 World Championships - where they were beaten by London )고 “어떤 IAAF고위임원”(a senior IAAF official)으로부터 경고 성 메시지를 들었다고 주장하였던 바 있다고 합니다

 

 

과연 2019년 열사의 나라 중동 카타르에서의 IAAF세계육상선수권대회가 성공적으로 치러질 수 있을 것인 지 국제 스포츠 계의 초미의 관심사 들 중 하나입니다.
