2019년 12월19일 한 외신은 근대올림픽 부활주창자인 쿠베르탱 2대 IOC위원장의 선언서(Pierre de Coubertin manifesto which relaunched Olympics)가 2019년 12월18일 경매사상 기록을 경신하며 US$880만불(약 105.6억원)에 팔렸다(sells for record $8.8 million at auction)고 보도하였다.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

올림픽대회의 부활을 이끈(led to the revival of the Olympic Games) 동 선언서(manifesto)는 120년이나 더 지난 후인 지난 2019년 12월19일 미국 뉴욕 시 경매에서 US$880만불(약 105.6억원)에 팔렸다(sells for record $8.8 million at auction)는 것으로 알려졌다

 

당초 역사유품(historic artefact)은 US$70만 불~US$100만불 정도에 팔릴 것으로 예상되었었지만 한 경매자의 손에 의해 예상가액의 8배가 넘는 가격으로 경매가 낙찰되었다(ended up in the hands of a bidder for over eight times the estimate)고 한다

 

경매를 주도한 소더비(Sotheby)측에 따르면 스포츠기념품 단일 항목으로 지불된 사상최고가액을 경신함으로써 2019년 초 최고가기록낙찰경매품목(the highest price ever paid for an item of piece of sports memorabilia)이었던 Babe Ruth뉴욕양키즈야구 유니폼(jersey)경매가 낙찰 액US$540만불(약64.8억원)을 상회하는 최고가로 낙찰된 것이다.

 

올림픽기념품 단일품목 경매최고낙찰 이전최고기록(previous record at auction for a piece of Olympic memorabilia)은 US$1,466,574불(약 17.6억원)으로 Berlin1936올림픽 육상4관왕인 Jesse Owens의 4개 금메달에 대해 한 경매자가 지불한 금액이었다

 

14페이지짜리 선언서 문건은1892년으로 거슬러 올라가게 되며 IOC창설자 인 Pierre de Coubertin의 친필문서이다.

 

동 문건은 뉴욕 시 경매에서 12분이 지속된 기나 긴 경매전쟁(a lengthy 12-minute bidding war)에 입찰자들이 참여한 가운데 입찰 가가 고공행진(the price skyrocketed)을 계속하였다

 

Sotheby경매주최측은 동 문건 입찰 전 참여자들 또는 최후 낙찰자에 대하여 발표하지 않았다.

 

손으로 직접 작성한 문건은 5천 단어로 구성되었으며 IOC가 창설(1894년)되기 2년 전 Sorbonne대학에서 행한 연설 중 핵심내용(handwritten document highlights)에서 왜 쿠베르탱남작이 올림픽 경기에 대한 고대그리스전통을 재현하고자 했는지9 why Coubertin wanted to bring the Ancient Greek tradition of Olympic competition back)에 대하여 그 내용을 수록하였다.

 

그는 올림픽이 국가들 간의 평화적인 경기를 제공하는 길이 될 수 있다(the Games could be a way to provide peaceful competition between countries)고 믿었던 방법에 대하여 서술하였다

 

 

 

다음은 쿠베르탱남작의 선언서(manifesto) 문건에 기술된 연설내용의 일부이다:

 

A.  "It is clear that the telegraph, railways, the telephone, the passionate research in science, congresses and exhibitions have done more for peace than any treaty or diplomatic convention." (과학, 콩그레스, 전시회에 있어서 전보와 철도와 전화와 열정적인 리서치 활동이 평화구현을 위해 조약이나 외교적 회합에서 보다 더 많은 일을 해왔음)

 

B.  "Well, I hope that athletics will do even more.(희망컨대, 이제 체육활동이 그 보다 더 많을 일을 할 것임)

 

C.  "Those who have seen 30,000 people running through the rain to attend a football match will not think that I am exaggerating. (축구경기를 관람하기 위해 빗속을 뚫고 뛰어 다니는 3만명의 모습을 목격한 사람들이라면 내가 과대포장하고 있다고 생각하지 않을 것임)

 

D.  "Let us export rowers, runners and fencers; this is the free trade of the future, and the day that it is introduced into the everyday existence of old Europe, the cause of peace will receive new and powerful support," he wrote.(우리는 이제 조정경기선수들과 육상선수들과 펜싱선수들을 밖으로 내 보냅시다; 이것이야말로 미래의 자유무역이며 구 유럽의 일상적인 존재적 모습에 도입되는 날 평화의 명분이 새롭고도 강력한 성원을 받게 될 것임)

 

E.  "That is enough to encourage me to think now about the second part of my programme.(그리함으로 내가 계획하고 있는 프로그램의 2번 째 부분에 대하여 이제 생각하도록 나를 고취시켜주기에 충분한 것임)

 

F.  "I hope that you will help me as you have helped me thus far and that, with you, I shall be able to continue and realize, on a basis appropriate to the conditions of modern life, this grandiose and beneficent work: the re-establishment of the Olympic Games." (본인은 여러분이 지금까지 나를 도와주었던 것처럼 여러분이 동참한 가운데 근대적 생활조건에 맞도록 조성된 적절한 토대에서 이렇게 장엄하고 선행적인 작업: 즉, 올림픽대회의 재설정,을 지속하고 실현시키고자 하는데 도움을 보탤 것이라고 희망하는 바임)

 

동 연설은 올림픽대회가 부활되도록 촉진하였는데 2년 후인 1896년 제1회 근대올림픽 창설대회가 그리스 아테네에서 열리도록 한 포맷(the inaugural edition in its current format being held in Athens in 1896)이 되었다.

 

제1,2차 2번의 세계대전 사이에 독특한 역사의 일부분(the unique piece of history)이 얼마 간 실종상태(missing for quite some time)였다

 

프랑스인인 Marquis d'Amat는 1990년대 실종된 문건을 찾아 나섰으며 궁극적으로 스위스 소재 수집가로부터 동 문건을 찾아(eventually located it from a collector in Switzerland) 내었다.

 

동 경매입찰 건은 서적 및 원고에 대한 30년 이상의 경매경력 사상 이처럼 고가로 경매망치를 많이 두드린 적이 결코 없었던 것(never hammered numbers quite this high in his 30-plus years of book and manuscript sales)으로 해당 경매인에게도 기록을 세웠다(set a personal record for the auctioneer)고 한다.
